Join authors Audrey Thayer and Colette Hyman for a conversation about Weaving Community: Indigenous Women and Leadership in the Twin Cities, exploring the often-overlooked work of Native American women who strengthened relationships and community in urban spaces.

Audrey Thayer also appears in the recent documentary Unraveling the Ribbon, which explores ribbon skirts, identity, tradition, and resilience a wonderful connection between this conversation and the stories we care about at Frozen River Film Festival.

☀ We are celebrating our new Development Director Mike Speck! 🎉

Mike Speck is a Winona- and La Crescent-based arts administrator. He spent COVID and its aftermath as the operations director at the Chatfield Center for the Arts, managing its response and recovery to pandemic-era adjustments. He serves as a review panelist for the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council. Past board service includes Theatre du Mississippi (including a term as Treasurer), Friends of the Chatfield Public Library (one term as VP and two as President), and the Society of American Fight Directors. Mike adjuncts at Viterbo University, teaching and choreographing stage combat, and works in the box office for La Crosse Community Theatre. Other arts administration work has included the Guthrie Theater, Maples Repertory Theatre, Gilmore Creek Summer Theatre, and Theatre in the Round. ☘ Thank you for all your work for the festival Mike!

Frozen River Film Festival will be joining the post-screening panel to discuss Kurosawa’s gripping crime drama and its enduring cinematic legacy. We’d love to see you there!

Set amidst the scenic vineyards of Elmaro Vineyard, Best of Fest brings together four remarkable films that explore identity, tradition, resilience, and our connection to history.
This curated program features:
Gigiigemin Baaga’adoweyang (“We Are Healed by Stickball”) by Finn Ryan, a moving portrait of culture, healing, and the enduring power of Indigenous tradition.
The Red Wool Pendleton by Tom Schroeder, an intimate story woven through memory, heritage, and the meaning carried by a single object.
Society of Crows by Mike McKinlay, an evocative exploration of the intelligence, mystery, and surprising social lives of one of nature’s most fascinating birds.
The Little Ancestor by Alexa Tremblay-Francoeur, a beautifully crafted reflection on family, ancestry, and the stories that shape who we are.
