Hi all! On behalf of the FRFF board, we'd like to reach out and let everyone know that our Operations Director, Kara Eggers, has departed the organization for a new opportunity. We'd like to thank Kara for their time and dedication to the organization. Kara worked for FRFF for several years, wearing hats of Venue Manager, Production Manager, Operations Director, and Co-Managing Director. We are thankful for their expertise and ability to organize, which has helped us manage a leadership change and also deliver the 2026 festival. All the best for your new opportunity, Kara!

Frozen River Film Festival (FRFF) is hiring an Operations Director and a Development Director to help grow our annual all-documentary festival, expand year-round programming, and strengthen community connections through film as we celebrate our 22nd anniversary! Based in beautiful Winona, Minnesota, a vibrant, arts-rich river town along the Mississippi, this role is a chance to make a meaningful impact in a creative, connected community.

Thank you to everyone who attended the in-person festival. It was so wonderful seeing so many folks in the venues and at events!

If you are watching films online, don't forget that there is still time to rate the films you watch. All votes from in-person and online viewing will be tallied together to select the People's Choice Award, which will be announced later this week! Online viewing is available until Wednesday, February 18th at 7pm. Please note: When you open a film on eventive, we are charged! So please do not open a film until you are ready watch!

We were thrilled to receive over 270 film submissions from talented filmmakers around the world, and after careful consideration, we selected 60 exceptional films to fill our programming.

Crash Course in Screenwriting

A workshop for anyone interested in writing screenplays. No experience required and experienced writers welcome. Lorraine Portman taught Screenwriting for ten years at Flagler College in Saint Augustine and has distilled a semester into an hour workshop covering what makes screenplays work and how to approach turning your ideas into screenplays.

Lorraine Portman is an award winning Filmmaker, Playwright, and Screenwriter. Lorraine has made seven narrative short films and a feature. She started filming the mermaid audition adventure, eventually working with a long time friend and frequent collaborator, Jay Pennington, to edit her first documentary, Unlikely Mermaid, which is playing in The Frozen River Film Festival.

Lorraine taught Playwriting and Screenwriting for ten years at Flagler College in Saint Augustine, Florida. She holds a B.A. in Theater from Smith College and M.F.A. in Film from Florida State University. Lorraine also attended the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. Portman has written a stack of screenplays which have been winning awards and placing in national and international competitions.

Portman has optioned several screenplays and has done work for hire in many genres. Lorraine is a Screenplay Development Consultant for LA based Samaco Films.

The Frozen River Film Festival, in partnership with the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, presents the River Set (Sunday, February 1st 3pm) and Ripple Effects and Karuara, People of the River (Sunday, February 1st 6pm). Introduced by MMAM’s Executive Director, Scott Po***ck, the River Set presents two documentary films that examine our relationship with water and the river and The second set presents two documentary films that examine our relationship with water. This event is part of the Frozen River Film Festival on February 1 - 8, 2026, and will take place at the ARC, the home of the historic Masonic Theatre.

Q***r-Centered Films at Frozen River Film Festival

We are excited to share a series of q***r-centered films, with thanks to Heart of Winona for helping spread the word about these screenings in our community.

These films explore q***r identity, resilience, compassion, and representation through personal stories, activism, and reflections on LGBTQ+ visibility in media. We invite audiences to engage with meaningful, human-centered storytelling and community dialogue.
