The Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas
A Pickers Paradise, 1972 - Present
Held for five days the which include the 3rd weekend of September each year, it features family friendly entertainment on four stages simultaneously, a large juried arts and crafts fair, workshops, and acoustic instrument contests. What began in 1972 with 10 acts and two contests now boasts 30 to 40 acts and eight c

ontests. Along with the flagship National Flat Pick Guitar Championships and the International Finger Style Guitar Championships, the Walnut Valley Festival hosts the International Autoharp, National Mountain Dulcimer, National Hammered Dulcimer, National Bluegrass Banjo, National Mandolin and the Walnut Valley Old Time Fiddle Championships. Although locals often refer to the Festival simply as "bluegrass", it has never been JUST bluegrass. It now is a blend of all kinds of acoustic music: bluegrass, folk, old-time country, a little bit cowboy, some Irish, blues, Cajun, jazz and more; and the bluegrass is both traditional and progressive.

Meet one of the members of the New Song Showcase judges panel, Jon Weisberger.

Though he’s won acclaim as a music journalist, broadcaster, bassist, producer and community leader, Jon Weisberger is probably best known as one of bluegrass music’s most widely recorded songwriters. He was named the IBMA’s first Songwriter of the Year in 2012, and earned the title again in 2025. He was a 2024 Grammy nominee for his role in co-writing Billy Strings’ “California Sober” (feat. Willie Nelson), and his songs have appeared on 7 Grammy-winning bluegrass albums, including 6 of the 10 most recent recipients, and on another 6 nominated projects. To date, he’s credited with more than 250 cuts by artists ranging from Billy Strings, the Travelin’ McCourys, the Infamous Stringdusters and Sierra Hull to Balsam Range, Blue Highway, Unspoken Tradition, and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers

Again, the weather is not cooperating with our Duck Jam schedule, but thank goodness the Marquee is good enough to let us set up there. You still have to bring your lawn chairs (although there is seating in the upper tier), but you don't have to worry about your chair leg getting wet.

🦆🚨 WE'RE MOVING THE PARTY INSIDE, AGAIN - SEE YOU AT Marquee Performing Arts Center TONIGHT🚨🦆

The ducks don't mind the rain, but sound equipment does... See you at 1007 Main. Bring a chair, your own beverages/snacks. Doors open at 6pm. Music starts at 7pm.

You don't want to miss The Fretliners and Old Sound!
See you soon.

And remember, The Winfield Lions Club will still be grilling pork burgers and hot dogs. The Soroptimists Of Winfield will have snacks and desserts. All proceeds benefit community projects!

The smiles, laughs, and good times spent together continues September 16-20. Come live it.
