Leaving Little Handprints, Making Big Memories

For decades, early childhood students at The Music School of Delaware have left their mark—literally—by adding their handprints to the walls of our Early Childhood classrooms. Today, students in Music Makers and Keyboard for Kids continue this beloved tradition. Children eagerly anticipate the chance to paint their hands, often spending the year deciding exactly where their handprint will go when it is finally their turn. For some, the experience is especially meaningful, as older siblings’ handprints already decorate the walls, creating a special family connection. Years later, many students return to these classrooms to find their tiny handprints and marvel at how much they’ve grown.

A Celebration of Women’s Choral Excellence Across Delaware

On Sunday afternoon, the Music School’s two premier women’s choruses—Cantabile, representing southern Delaware, and the Delaware Women’s Chorus, representing New Castle County—came together for a beautiful concert at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes, celebrating the school’s commitment to exceptional choral music across the state.

The program featured performances by each choir individually, as well as a powerful combined choir presentation. Audiences also enjoyed featured solo performances by Amy Baker-Sheridan, Sara Brown, Shayla Caple, Sharon Keeler, Kelley Mallon, Kelsey Oldland, and Elyse Poinsett.

Special thanks to guest instrumentalists George Freeman, double bass, and Scotty Horey, percussion, for adding depth and artistry to the afternoon’s program.

Under the extraordinary direction of Joanne Ward, and with the expert accompaniment of Georgiana Ibach, the choirs delivered a memorable and moving performance. A deeply gifted musician, inspiring conductor, and devoted champion of choral artistry, Joanne has shaped and strengthened the choruses in immeasurable ways.

During the concert, it was shared that Joanne will be stepping down from her role as Music Director of the Delaware Women’s Chorus. While she will be deeply and sincerely missed, her musical legacy and impact on generations of singers will continue to resonate for years to come.

Congratulations to Joanne, Georgiana, and our phenomenal singers for an inspiring afternoon of music—and heartfelt thanks to Joanne for her exceptional leadership, artistry, and dedication.

A Big Day for Our Early Childhood Musicians!
Our youngest musicians, ages 4–7, took the Music School stage for a joyful Early Childhood Move-Up Ceremony! Students performed in small ensembles and shared special piano performances, showcasing all they’ve learned this year.  Following their performances, each student received a special trophy to enthusiastic applause from proud families and audience members.

Why Youth String Orchestra Matters

String orchestra plays an important role in youth development—musically, socially, and personally. At the Music School, our Festival Strings and Gala Strings provide young musicians with meaningful ensemble experiences and continued musical growth, helping prepare students for future opportunities, including the Delaware Youth Symphony Orchestra.  Led by Jenny Lang, Head of the Suzuki Academy Department, these ensembles are an integral part of the Music School’s string program, fostering collaboration, confidence, discipline, and artistry in young musicians.

At this past Saturday’s concert, Safiya Doctor, violin, took the stage as concerto soloist with the Gala Strings, sharing a wonderful performance and representing the exciting musical growth happening within our string program. Congratulations, Safiya!
