Cucalorus brings people together to celebrate, discover and create independent films, original performances and productions, and encourage start-ups and entrepreneurs. That's our mission. Our job is to watch your movies. Review your performances. Look over your workshop proposals. For fun we like to eat anything with bacon and shoot off fireworks. Follow the legacy of filmmaker and playwright Luis Valdez. A founding figure of the Chicano Movement, Valdez is best known for his play Zoot Suit, the Ritchie Valens biopic La Bamba, and the theatre company El Teatro Campesino. After the screening, there will be a community discussion with the filmmaker and community partners.

After its limited VHS release in 1989, Riverbend largely disappeared from public view and became a little-known entry in Black independent cinema. Decades later, the film was rediscovered by Michael Dennis after promoting it on his YouTube channel. The film gained traction, sparking the idea for a restoration. Riverbend’s first public screening in over thirty years took place at the Denton Black Film Festival in Texas. The festival led to the discovery of more missing materials, paving the way for further restoration. Come to Jengo's Playhouse to watch the restored Riverbend!

The 1989 action drama, Riverbend, has been restored and recently praised for it's bold political edge. A Black major (played by Steve James) and his men are on the run from a rigged court-martial and hide out in a small Georgia town where a cruel white sheriff is terrorizing the Black population. Together with Bell Coleman (played by Margaret Avery), they formulate a bold plan to fight for freedom and human rights.

Armed with a 16mm camera and a grant to make a documentary about the lingering aftermath of William Tecumseh Sherman's 1864 march to the sea, Ross McElwee gets sidetracked. After his girlfriend breaks up with him, Ross shifts his attention from the historical to the personal, to the battlefield of modern love, and embarks on a sociological chronicle that documents the courting rites and rituals of the New South.
