Each and every family stays forever in our hearts as doulas and this one, I will truly never forget witnessing her strength through the unexpected. I don’t think I can fully put into words just how strong this mom is. So grateful life had us cross paths and to have been welcomed into her space to support her and her family in such a critical time. Thank you again, Tori for such kind words & sharing your story with others.🤍

Maybe the “redemption” you’re searching for isn’t in your next birth but in the way you honor and give grace to yourself and your previous birth story instead of turning the blame inward.

“If I had only been more educated.”
“If I had only advocated for myself.”
“If I had only been stronger.”

When we try to force ourselves to live up to an unrealistic standard, we trap ourselves in a cycle of grief and guilt while drawing a line between an outcome and our worth.

Birth is wildly unpredictable. Even with the best planning, education and team…it can still take unexpected turns leaving your brain just trying to protect itself searching for a reason to make sense of what happened.

So why even hire a doula then?

Instead of viewing doula support as a shield, view it as an anchor. We can’t shield you from birth trauma (I promise you we wish we could). However, there’s a huge difference between going through scary things happening to you alone vs with someone in your corner that sees you, holds you however you are feeling and fiercely supports you.

Education, informed decisions, choosing a great support team and thinking of things you’d like to go/do differently this time are all wonderful things but we really have to dig deeper within ourselves, give ourselves space to grieve, and let go of the idea that a certain circumstance in birth will redeem us. It’s unfair to put that pressure on yourself and your baby.

Let’s focus less on a “perfect do over” and more on what makes you feel safe, respected and informed. You didn’t fail the previous time and you don’t need a perfect birth to be whole!📢

You may not be able to control labor & birth but you deserve an anchor in the storm.🤍

💡Our biggest tip to anyone that’s experienced birth trauma or difficult/complex feelings about their birth is finding a Perinatal Mental Health Therapist who specializes in trauma. Look for professionals who are certified in perinatal mental health (PMH-C). You are not alone & we are always here to help however we can!🫶🏼

5 words that signal to us you’re most likely meeting your baby soon? “I can’t do this anymore.”

🌀The transition phase of labor is the shortest (30min to 2hrs) but most intense phase of labor. Your body is dilating from about 7-10cm and contractions are about 2 min apart. The hormonal cocktail your body’s producing may have you feeling nauseous, panicky, doubting yourself or feeling like you want to run away, irritatable, hot flashes/temp changes and body shakes. It really can feel like you’re spiraling after finally getting used to active labor.

😨While your body is making the shift from dilating fully to your baby descending, you may feel intense urges like you’re having an uncontrollable bowel movement or like you want to push- which is due to your baby’s head coming down!

😮‍💨During this phase we get to see our clients go farther than they ever thought they could! This phase is an intense sensory experience and it’s the time to surrender, lean on your partner & team’s encouragement, put all your focus on deep horse lip breathing and low guttural moan.

On our end, we may be replenishing your cool cloth, helping you stay grounded, reassuring your partner, maybe we’ll have a pep talk or just be the space for you to express frustration on because as amazing as this phase is, when your in it (& after all the hard work of labor you’ve done) it can feel really tough too. It is okay to feel whatever you are feeling!

It’s easy to let doubt creep in & forget this is almost over. You are safe. There is no one stronger than you are in this moment. There’s no shame here. Be in your body, be your truest and fullest self. This is where the team you’ve chosen is most important & we are all here for YOU.💪🏽

We’ll let you in on a little doula secret 🤫 the power isn’t actually in the physical paper “plan” itself🫢(& here at Daybreak, we don’t even call that paper most people typically think of a “birth plan” but a Birth Preferences List that is usually always just 1 page)

The process of “birth planning” and what makes it so powerful is it’s about discovering what feels right for you and reflects your values, preferences, and hopes.

Embrace this time as an opportunity to connect with yourself, your partner, and your baby on a profound level.🤍

“Since you see this every day... what is the ONE piece of advice you can give me?”

We figured they were probably waiting for a secret labor hack or a list of “must-have” baby gadgets.

We looked at them and realized that all the professional training in the world doesn’t compare to the power of one simple and honest truth.

We told them, “We actually have nothing, other than this. You are going to do a great job. All you can do is the best you can and that is *exactly* what your baby needs.”

As doulas, we spend so much time preparing families for the “how-to,” but the most important thing we can ever teach is the “you’ve got this.”

The longer we do this work, the more we realize how much pressure is put on parents to “optimize” every moment.

In planning for the “perfect” scenario, what is often forgotten is trusting the person in the center of it all. You.🥹

So, if you’re scrolling feeling totally overwhelmed by the “shoulds” or the “what-ifs,” let this be your permission to take a deep breath.

There is no secret.
There is just you,
doing your best for you and your baby,
and that is the most beautiful thing.

You’ve got this (and we’re always in your corner).🤍

Getting ready for the journey of a lifetime? Here are some essentials to include in your hospital bag:

👝🧦Labor & Postpartum Must-Haves: Don’t forget comfy clothes, socks, and slippers for pacing the hallways during labor. Pack toiletries, lip balm, and hair ties to keep you feeling fresh.

🪪Important Documents: Remember your ID, insurance card, birth plan, and any medical records. Most hospitals have a pre-check in forms you can fill out in pregnancy so be sure to complete those. However, having these ready will help streamline the check-in process once you arrive.

📚🎧Entertainment & Distraction: Bring your favorite book, playlist, favorite game or something to work on if you knit or needlepoint. Labor (especially inductions) can take time, and having something to pass the time, give your hands something to do and can help you relax. (Don’t forget your charger!)🔌

🥨🧃Snacks & Hydration: Pack your favorite non-perishable snacks, some easy protein like Chomps, your fave electrolyte drink packets and a refillable water bottle. Staying nourished and hydrated is essential.💧

😌Comfort Items: A pillow from home, a cozy blanket, and your own pillowcase can add a touch of comfort to your hospital stay. Sometimes the room can get really cold and you can even get hot during labor so a portable fan (like one you may already have for your stroller!) can really come in handy!🪭

🍼Baby Essentials: Don’t forget baby’s first outfit, swaddles, and a going-home outfit. Also, have the
car seat ready for the journey home!

April is Cesarean Awareness Month🤍

Birth is a massive, life-altering threshold and it doesn’t look the same for everyone.

For some of you, a cesarean birth was the plan from day one. You chose it for your mental health, for the stability of a schedule or even maybe it was the path that let you feel most in control and empowered. There is so much beauty and autonomy in being ready to meet your baby on your own terms.

For some, it was the “plan b” that you didn’t think would actually happen. It was the moment you had to dig deeper than you ever thought possible and surrender your original vision to ensure you and your baby’s safety. That transition from the labor room to the OR takes a level bravery that is nothing short of heroic.

Whether you felt the joy of a planned arrival or the weight of an unexpected turn or maybe a mix of many different emotions, there is one thing we can say for certain…You laid on that table and you gave everything for your baby. You navigated the sting of the recovery, the first walk down the hallway that felt like a marathon and the reality of healing from a major abdominal surgery freshly postpartum while still showing up for a tiny human who needs you.

Your birth story is never “less than.” Your birth story is one of strength, sacrifice and soo much love.

Maybe you’re feeling confident in your birth story or maybe you’re still navigating complex feelings around your birth. We celebrate all feelings here with us.🤍

If you’ve been through it, tell us: What’s one thing you’re proud of about your birth?👇
