On Thursday, October 26, the US-Japan Baseball Diplomacy Project will screen Koshien: Japan’s Field of Dreams. The Director, Ema Ryan Yamazaki, will join by Zoom to introduce the film and take part in a Q&A after the screening. The title of the film is a shorthand for the Japanese high school baseball tournament. It is one of the most popular sporting events in Japan. Join us to learn more! 7pm, Ewell 107 at the William & Mary campus. Open to the public. This event will be followed by “150 Years of US-Japan Baseball Diplomacy” Symposium, which will be held at the Commonwealth Auditorium from noon on Friday, October 27.
10月26日木曜日、午後7時から『甲子園：フィールド・オブ・ドリームズ』をウィリアム・アンド・メアリー大学(Ewell 107)で上映します。上映に先立ち、監督の山崎エマさんが日本からリモートで映画の紹介をしてくださることになっています。そして上映後には質疑応答も！映画上映の翌日正午から、コモンウェルス会堂で「日米野球外交150年」というテーマのシンポジウムを開催いたします。いずれのイベントにも奮ってご参加ください！

One of the main highlights of our “150 Years of US-Japan Baseball Diplomacy” Symposium is Greg “Boomer” Wells. Boomer is a former MLB player who played for 10 years in Japan. A deft infielder and all-round slugger, he enjoyed great success throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. In 1984, he hit .355, 37 home runs, and 130 RBIs in a 130-game season, winning both the Triple Crown and the MVP as a member of the Hankyu Braves (now the Orix Buffaloes). He also earned two Gold Gloves as a first baseman, in 1986 and 1987. The US-Japan Baseball Diplomacy Project is excited to welcome Boomer san to Williamsburg!
本シンポジウムではブーマー・ウェルズさんをお迎えすることになりました！ブーマーさんは大リーグで二年プレーした後、日本で10年、主に阪急ブレーブズ（現：オリックス・バッファローズ）の主砲として活躍しました。特にその繊細でかつ爆発的な打撃力には定評があり、1984年には打率3割5分5厘、本塁打37本、打点130を記録し、その年の三冠王及びMVPを獲得しました。守備の方でも、1986年と1987年にゴールドグラブ賞を受賞しております。本シンポジウムでは、長年日米の野球に携わってきたブーマーさんにそのご体験をお話しいただくことになっております。どうかご期待ください！

The US-Japan Baseball Diplomacy Project is excited to welcome Masanori “Mashi” Murakami as a featured speaker. Mashi Murakami began his professional baseball career with the Nankai Hawks, before pitching for the San Francisco Giants in 1964 and 1965. He was the first Japanese-born player to play in the Major Leagues, recording the first win, first save, first strikeout, and even first hit! We look forward to learning more about his pioneering experience at our “150 Years of US-Japan Baseball Diplomacy” symposium. Special thanks to the Japan Retired Foreign Player Association for making his visit happen.
本シンポジウムでは日本から「マッシー・ムラカミ」こと村上雅則さんをお迎えすることになりました！村上さんは南海ホークスで投手としてデビューを果たし、1964年と1965年にサンフランシスコ・ジャイアンツでプレーしました。日本人初のメジャーリーガーとして初勝利、初セーブ、初奪三振、さらには初ヒットを記録された村上さんに、日米両国での野球体験をお伺いすることになっております。乞うご期待！

The “Closer” Keynote Speaker of our “150 Years of US-Japan Baseball Diplomacy” Symposium is Bobby Valentine, is a former baseball player and manager. After ten years as an MLB player, he managed the Texas Rangers and the New York Mets, which he took to the World Series in 2000. In Japan, Bobby managed the China Lotte Marines twice and led the team to a Japan Series Championship in 2005. He was the first non-Japanese manager to achieve this feat.
本シンポジウムのトリに基調講演者としてご登壇頂くボビー・バレンタイン監督は、メジャーリーグで選手として10シーズンプレーした後、テキサス・レンジャーズとニューヨーク・メッツの監督を務め、2000年にはメッツをワールドシリーズに導きました。日本では2度にわたって千葉ロッテマリーンズの監督を務め、2005年には外国人監督として初めて日本シリーズで優勝を果たしました。

OBIS =^ (Japan Retired Foreign Player Association) & パートナーシップを締結いたしました。日本プロ野球外国人OB選手会は日本のプロ野球の元外国人選手、コーチ、監督などを支援する団体で、、今回のパートナーシップにより、日本で活躍した外国人選手へのオーラル・ヒストリー
インタビューを実施すること、また来月開催予定のシンポジウムに元選手を講演者としてお招きすることが可能となりました。プロジェクトチーム一同、大変喜んでおります。よろしくお願い致します！

The US-Japan Baseball Diplomacy Project
(USJBDP) at William & Mary is proud to announce an official partnership with the Japan Retired Foreign Player
Association (JRFPA). The JRFPA is a non-profit organization comprised of former foreign-born baseball players who have played for Nippon Professional Baseball (the professional league in Japan). This partnership will enable us to interview former professional players for our oral history project and invite distinguished speakers for our forthcoming symposium (more on both later). We look forward to working with this wonderful organization in the coming months!
