Hello everyone,

It is with a heavy heart that I write you this morning. Due to rising costs of insurance, timing, materials, and lack of registrations I am forced to cancel this years Big Ring. I cannot express how grateful I am to all of you that choose to be apart of the race over the past few years. I never took on the Big Ring to make money. It was a race that I just loved and wanted to continue. But the last few I have paid to put on and this years addition is looking to be the most costly yet.

Please visit the Big Ring website and download the maps. Go ride the routes and enjoy the KS gravel that I had planned for you. I hope to see you all out on the gravel sometime.

Here’s to the next chapter in the Big Ring story!

Respectfully,
Jeff Lovgren

The last course for this years Big Ring is a combination of an old loop and some famous roads. The Buffalo Road Loop. Taking place on October 16th at noon, it is a total of 28 miles.

If you ride gravel around the ICT then more than likely you have been on Buffalo Rd and waived to the cow on top of the old school. The essential training grounds to XC runners and cyclists alike. Almost every time I leave me house for a ride Buffalo Rd is on the route. This is home turf for me.

I have long wanted to incorporate Buffalo Rd into the Big Ring but with the old format was unable to due to the possible stop crossing 70th for traffic. But this year we are going to give it a shot. Starting at Fulton Valley Farms you will be able to park at the start/finish line. Turning east for a short stint on 60th over the Walnut river will take you to Buffalo Rd. Where there is the first climb before 70th. Just a warm up for the next two have a bit more bite. Take a left and drop back off the ride for a small amount of recovery. Make your way over to the old school to wave hello to cow statue before turning back east to cross the old stone arch bridge. Turning north is one long climb back to 70th but once across you will have some good roads to recover on. Just don’t get caught sleeping or the other cyclist may leave you in the dust. Turn right on 60th for some nice shade before turn north this time on Buffalo Rd. Watch out for the climb over the turnpike. It is short but could cause some riders to come unhitched. Making your way back to Fulton Rd where another set of punchy climbs await before the start/finish line. Cross the line and lap 1 is done. 1 more to go.

Registration is open! Let’s make this the best Big Ring yet!

The third course up on the Big Ring calendar is everyones favorite Gordon Loop. Taking place on October 15th at noon.

This is my favorite of all the loops. Partially because I won here back in 2016 in a all out sprint to the finish. But mostly these are just some of the coolest gravel roads around.

Wanting to pay homage to the spirit of the Big Ring but yet keep the new low lap format I struggled to find a route. I ended up riding multiple loop options before choosing this route. It has genuinely interesting terrain. The start/finish is still in the same spot at the top of the switch back. This time you will take a Journey through the county side where you will encounter another switch back. There will be amazing tree lined gravel roads. There is a closed to cars bridge easily passable on a bike. There are paved roads! (Gasp) There is a R&R crossing with a nice kicker to it. All this before you come back to the Gordon loop. Once back on the Gordon loop you will make the loop twice. That way you can get two doses of the famous Gordon switch back.

Next course up on the Big Ring calendar is the August Airport Loop. Taking place on October 9th at noon.

I really like this loop. Possibly because it was the first Big Ring I raced. It has some nostalgic meaning to me. I often find myself riding these roads for my training rides.

The new route will start out at the end of the runway before making the turn south. Running south will take you across a narrow bridge and up the switch back climb. After that there is a 1/2 mile grinder before turning west. The next few miles are full of rollers. Running along the back side of Flint Hills golf course is an amazing tree lined road. Turning back east will take you through a jog in the road over 4 mile creek. Then turning north will take you back the the start/finish. This will be our TT course and you will have the opportunity to experience the route for two loops.
