Whiting Empanada Fest is a city-community collaboration between the City of Whiting's Parks Department and and Whiting Hispanic Heritage Organization to highlight Whiting’s rich cultural diversity. Whiting Empanada Fest’s mission is to celebrate culture, provide festive activities for all to enjoy.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, outnumbered Mexican troops defeated a superior French army, becoming a lasting symbol of resistance against foreign intervention. However, contrary to popular belief, it is not Mexican Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16th.
