On November 3rd and 4th, the WCJC Acting I class traveled to four different high schools for the annual student directed tour show to give students experience in traveling production work and adaptability. From Van Vleck, to Needville, to Sealy, concluding with Boling. To all staff and students of each school, thank you so much for allowing us to share our love for the craft, we had a blast!

The 2026 One Act Play Festival will take place on Thursday, February 6, and Friday, February 7. This exciting event is presented by the Department of Drama/Theatre at Wharton County Junior College in collaboration with the Needville High School Theatre Arts Department.

Festival performances will be held on the main stage at Needville High School and will be followed by in-depth workshop critiques led by an accredited One Act Play judge from the WCJC Fine Arts faculty. These hands-on sessions are designed to help you and your students strengthen your production as you prepare for the UIL One Act Play experience.

Schools are encouraged to bring their shows in any stage of readiness—whether fully staged or still in progress. Costumes, props, and furniture are optional. The focus of this clinic is on learning, collaboration, and artistic growth, not on presenting a final polished performance. A basic UIL unit set will be provided.
Please refer to the attached document for additional details about this exciting event.

We warmly invite all interested schools to take part in this enriching educational opportunity. Clinic time slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so we encourage early registration.

For participation or further information about the 2026 One Act Play Festival, please contact Jami Hughes or Greg McLarty through the department's website to receive information about the event.

We look forward to welcoming you and your students for a day of theatre learning and creativity!

An evening of Neo-Futurist theatre is energetic, unpredictable, and unlike traditional theatre. The ensemble performs 30 short plays in 60 minutes, guided by a timer that stops the show exactly at the hour mark—no matter where they are. At the start, the audience receives a “menu” of numbered play titles and shouts out which ones they want to see, determining the order of performance in real time. Each play is short—sometimes only a minute long—and can be funny, sad, absurd, autobiographical, political, or experimental. Some are tightly scripted, while others depend on improvisation or audience participation. There’s no “fourth wall”; actors speak directly to the audience, acknowledge the space, and invite interaction, making every performance unique. The result is fast, raw, and real. The performers are always themselves, not characters, and everything happens in the moment, blending humor, vulnerability, and urgency. Think of it as a theatrical mixtape—fun, messy, and full of surprises—where each piece offers something different: funny, profound, elegant, disgusting, topical, irreverent, terrifying, or even musical, but always truthful and focused on the here and now.

We are so proud of all that our theatre alumni have accomplished since their time here at Wharton County Junior College. As we continue to grow and inspire new students, we would love to highlight the voices and experiences of our graduates.

Would you be willing to share a short quote about your time in the WCJC Theatre Program? You might reflect on:

* What you gained from your experience here (skills, friendships, confidence, career preparation).
* A memorable moment or production.
* How the program impacted your path after college.

Your words could be featured in our promotional materials, social media, or on our website to help show future students what makes this program special.

If you’d like to participate, please send us your quote (2–5 sentences) along with your name and graduation year. Or you can email me at [email protected]. I have photos of all the shows since I have been here and a few before that. Photos from your time at WCJC are also welcome!

Thank you for helping us celebrate the lasting impact of the WCJC Theatre Program. We look forward to sharing your story with our community.

DRACULA, A Comedy of Terrors is a Bram-new comedy you can really sink your teeth into. Filled with clever wordplay and anything-goes pop culture references, it’s a 90-minute, gender-bending, quick-changing, laugh-out-loud reimagining of the gothic classic, perfect for audiences of all blood types.

In the treacherous mountains of Transylvania, a meek English real estate agent takes a harrowing journey to meet a new and mysterious client, who also just happens to be the most terrifying and ferocious monster the world has ever known: Count Dracula! As famed female vampire hunter Jean Van Helsing and company chase Drac from Transylvania to the British countryside to London and back, their antics are guaranteed to increase your pulse and cause bloodcurdling screams—of laughter.

The play takes place over 24 hours in three separate cottages on the grounds of a large hospital in the United States. Within the three cabins are three patients: Joe, Brian and Felicity, who are to live with their respective families as they have reached the end of their treatment. They have agreed to be part of a psychological program where they live within the hospital grounds and have interviews with a psychiatrist.

WCJC offers scholarships through its drama/theatre department. Remember, our program aims to help you discover your hidden talents. You don’t need to be a drama student to apply, but you will need to audition.

To audition, you will need to:
1. Reach out to the WCJC Drama/Theatre department to express your interest.
2. Fill out the Scholarship application (QR code is on the poster). Here you will submit the completed application, a brief resume, and a recommendation letter from a former theater teacher.

Students will find our program appealing when comparing the quality and costs of other schools to our college's low cost and personal one-on-one teaching environment. It costs $3000 to attend a four-year college for 15 hours. At WCJC, 15 hours equals $500!

After completing the drama program at WCJC, you’ll be well-prepared to pursue a bachelor’s degree which can open doors to roles such as an actor, teacher, designer, director, and so much more.

Fall registration is now open! Contact us for more information!
