MARCH 22nd: THE BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET (1984) with actor Alvin Alexis. An alien escapes captivity on his home planet and lands in New York City, where he navigates life on the streets of 1980s Harlem. Director John Sayles blends science fiction, comedy, and social commentary, creating a powerful and humane story filled with unforgettable characters.

This Sunday, 2PM at the West Orange AMC Dine-In Theater, Essex Green Shopping Center, 495 Prospect Ave., West Orange, NJ 07052.

Speaker bio:

Alvin Alexis is a journeyman actor whose film career was launched with three high-profile projects: 1978’s “The Wiz,” the musical retelling of The Wizard of Oz starring superstars Michael Jackson and Diana Ross; 1980’s “Willie & Phil,” famed director Paul Mazurkey’s remake of the French New Wave classic, “Jules et Jim;” and 1984’s “Brother From Another Planet,” the fourth feature from acclaimed filmmaker, John Sayles.” In 1986, he made history when his character, Rodger in “Night of the Demons,” became the first African American character to survive in a horror film. At a time when the genre followed a predictable pattern, Roger broke it, outsmarting the chaos, escaping the demons, and rewriting the rules of who gets to live. Other film credits include Sweet Liberty (with Alan Alda), For Love or Money (with Michael J. Fox), and America (with Richard Belzer). TV appearances include Sesame Street and 21 Jump Street. Acting off-Broadway since 1978, he was in the original productions of the plays Class Enemy (with Lonny Price) and Zooman and the Sign (with Giancarlo Esposito, Frances Foster, and Carl Gordon).
