Our History
RoCA is a multi-arts center dedicated to creating and promoting art through its School for The Arts, exhibitions, workshops, literary and performing arts events, Summer Arts Day Camp, and outreach programs. Originally known as the Rockland Foundation, RoCA was founded in 1947 by a group of renowned artists, including Aaron Copland, Paulette Goddard, Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya, Maxwell Anderson, and Helen Hayes. Their intention was to create a new cultural center, separate from New York City, taking advantage of the immense creative talent that had recently migrated to the region. RoCA outgrew its Nyack storefront and moved in the 1950's to a ten-acre property in West Nyack. What began as a grassroots, volunteer organization has developed into the largest professionally staffed multi-arts center in the lower Hudson Valley. RoCA attracts over 25,000 visitors and students annually from throughout the region. RoCA's School for the Arts and intensive Summer Arts Day Camp has an annual enrollment of over 2000. RoCA's Community Outreach Programs provide studio art programs to the underserved populations in the area. RoCA also administers the County 1% for Art, program that commissions public works of art. Experience the gripping two-act drama, The Burning of New York, inspired by the true events of The Great Conspiracy of 1741.

In the spring of that year, a series of enigmatic fires ravaged lower Manhattan, sending the City into a state of panic. Following a swift trial in Westchester County, dozens were convicted of an alleged slave uprising, culminating in the tragic lynching of 30 individuals on Wall Street.

Join Shades Repertory Theater for a powerful play reading, written and directed by Samuel Harps, in partnership with The Gordon Center for Black Culture and Arts.

Rockland Center for the Arts is proud to announce its annual Fall Family Art Festival! Surrounded by the vibrant colors of fall on our beautiful five acres of property, this Fall Festival celebrates the season through various artistic activities.

This event will include many of RoCA’s teaching artists, both from our Summer Arts Camp and our School of the Arts throughout the year.

Explore The Catherine Konner Sculpture Park while participating in creative projects scattered around the grounds. Join local artist Poramit Thantapalit for an incredible Cyanotype Printing Workshop, or stop by the Fall Centerpiece Tent to make your own seasonal arrangement using natural materials.

Before taking a tour of the sculpture park and creating a sketch of your favorite artwork, take a break and warm up with some hot c***r and live music.

Week 1 of Arts Camp @ RoCA is complete, and what a week it was! From stop motion filmmaking to art and nature, we had an amazing start to the summer. Even through the extreme heat during the week, campers swam each day- taking some time to cool off!

Campers spent Monday and Friday prepping for the camp show this session, "Back to the Future," and spent the rest of the week exploring each medium Arts Camp @ RoCA has to offer! Dance, Music, Cartooning, Ceramics, Painting & Drawing, STEAM, and more!

Stay tuned for photos from Week 2!
