The Allen County Fairgrounds will crawl with more than 2,000 4-wheel drive vehicles gathered from across the country for a powerhouse off-road weekend. Wellington has some great new years eve celebrations, from the big public fireworks display in Frank Kitts Park to a number of top parties and events across the city's many top hotels, bars and restaurants.

Although many locals head off to more touristy or beach based venues for their new year parties - places such as Nelson, Hawkes Bay, Taupo and Tauranga are very popular choices - there will still be enough going on in Wellington to keep you entertained over the Christmas and new year period.

As well as the new year parties and fireworks be sure to make the most of your trip by checking out some of the local attractions - the Lord of the Rings location tour is always worth a look, while visits to the Museum of New Zealand, the ZEALANDIA Sanctuary, Wellington Botanic Gardens and Mount Victoria are all highly recommended.

Roger Bannister died on March 3, over 63 years after becoming the first man to officially run a mile in under four minutes.

Since Bannister’s landmark run on May 6, 1954, sub-four-minute miles have become relatively commonplace. Over 500 American men alone have broken the four-minute mark, according to Track & Field News. That includes 21 who have run miles under four minutes since the beginning of 2018. At least 10 US high school students are in the record books for accomplishing that as well.

But new men’s records for the mile are nonexistent in our century. Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco set the current world record of 3:43.13 on July 7, 1999. El Geurrouj, now retired from competitive running, holds seven of the top 10 times for the men’s mile.
