Mq̓ʷmoq̓ʷ Xʷt̓ip 100 update #2
Miles 19-40
I began the climb up towards the Westend lookout. I’m familiar with this whole area after elk hunting my whole life which made it fun to run it all. What was not fun was being exposed to the sun during the heat of the day. I battled the heat until about Red ridge and then I was under some tree cover a majority of the way.
There’s a steep climb up a washed out draw. I cooled off my face in the runoff and climbed and climbed and climbed. Once I reached the lookout road and could see the tower at the top it was like the mountain gave me energy and I picked up the pace. At the top my dad, will, and Chris were waiting for me along with a plague of black flies. Restocked, ate food, and they made me take a swig from their special water bottle (it really was water).
Then it was time to make the climb down. Remembering how I wrecked my legs aggressively attacking the downhills at TC100 I took it easy. Then I was on sandcreek and noticed every gradual slope. I passed by a moose and thanked it for sharing its home with me and kept moving. I met back up with my crew just below Grouse Ridge and fueled up. I had to stop and treat a blister on my big toe and changed out my socks in the process from toe socks to regular style.
At this point this had been the farthest I’ve ran all year and my legs felt fresh like I’ve barely ran. Keeping it around 15 minute pace was working great. I had a slight climb and then it was going to be all downhill to drum road. This stretch I was really able to go inward into a mental space almost like a meditation as the miles went by. I just kept thinking how grateful I was to be able to do something like this and all the support that was coming in. As drum road neared the mosquitos started coming out and I realized that was one thing I forgot about, bug spray. I fought the bugs for the next mile or two and then came in at mile 40.5 to my crew waiting and I was so happy when they said they had bug spray. We began game planning on when to prepare for the night. I still had time and could get miles in before needing lights and warmer clothes.
