๐๐๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง, ๐๐โ On March 12, 2026 the Watertown Riverfest Board of Directors voted that the 2026 Watertown Riverfest will be postponed to undertake a comprehensive effort to refresh and reimagine the festivalโs format and grounds.
This decision follows a period of significant growth for the festival. Since 2023, Riverfest has experienced record-breaking attendance, exceeding 46,500 visitors from across the country over the four-day weekend, and has generated more than $2.5 million each festival weekend in economic impact for local hotels, restaurants, bars, gas stations, and retail businesses. During this time, the festival has maintained free admission โ largely unheard of in todayโs festival circuit - while expanding entertainment offerings, booking nationally recognized bands, and introducing popular features such as its wildly popular pyromusical fireworks show.
The Board identified two primary factors that led to the decision:

Severe rainfall in 2025 exposed critical structural and electrical issues at Riverside Park. The stage experienced significant roof leakage, resulting in damage to band, audio and lighting equipment and electrical systems. There are concerns that the stage is structurally unstable, presenting safety risks for performers, crew, and attendees. While replacement or temporary staging solutions are being explored, including rental options, estimates for rental structures exceed the usual annual budget for the four-day music schedule.
Additionally, outdated and damaged electrical infrastructure in the park limits food vendor and exhibitor participation and limits entertainment capabilities. Planning, design, and permitting efforts are underway, but completion is not expected before August 2026.

Watertown Riverfest Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization since 2023, is governed by a volunteer board of seven directors serving staggered three-year terms. Following the successful completion of terms by key leadership members, multiple critical roles remain unfilled.
Despite outreach efforts reaching more than 30,300 individuals via social media in December 2025 and January 2026. Several essential volunteer leadership rolesโincluding Vice-President (Board Position), Sponsorship Chairperson, Food Chairperson, Onsite Money Manager, Grounds and Cleaning Crew Chairperson and Exhibitor Chairpersonโremained vacant, impacting the organizationโs ability to execute the festival at its expected scale.
