The Farmall letter series and the M.
A concise history of the Farmall Letter Series begins with International Harvester’s shift in the 1930s toward modern, styled, all purpose row crop tractors. By the late 1930s, Farmall introduced a full lineup identified by letters—A, B, C, H, and M—each sized for different farm needs. These tractors replaced the earlier F Series and featured streamlined sheet metal styling, adjustable axles, improved transmissions, and compatibility with a wide range of implements. They became some of the most widely produced and influential tractors in American agriculture.

The Farmall M was the largest and most powerful of the original letter series row crop tractors. It is featured on the worker tee shirts at the 2026 Waterman Lions Summerfest and Antique Tractor & Truck show. Introduced in 1939 as the successor to the Farmall F 30, it became one of IH’s most successful tractors, with 270,140 units built. It was designed for three 14 inch plows, heavy tillage, belt work, and general row crop farming. It was considered by many as a truly revolutionary tractor.

🚜 The Case Model L and Its Legacy: Powering America’s Fields
🌾 Born in the Heartland (1929–1940)
The Case Model L, introduced in 1929 by the J.I. Case Company of Racine, Wisconsin, was a game-changer in American agriculture. With its 6.6L 4-cylinder engine, the Model L could pull a 4-bottom plow, making it one of the most powerful tractors of its time. Farmers admired its rugged build, three-speed transmission, and distinctive long-nose design—a symbol of strength during the Great Depression.
• Over 31,000 units were built before production ended in 1940.
• Available in both standard farm (L) and industrial (LI) versions.
• Originally equipped with steel wheels, many were later retrofitted with rubber tires.
