Hiraeth is a Welsh word that describes a longing for a place that exists more vividly in memory, imagination, or yearning than in reality, often shaped by loss, shifting perspective, or the simple passage of time. Led by percussionist and Strathmore Artist in Residence Michael McSweeney, Hiraeth Project explores that feeling through the lens of the diverse musical traditions that have shaped each of its artists.

Lt. Commander Miles Dunford (callsign: “Precious”) grew up drawing airplanes and went on to become a Navy pilot, later selected to fly in Top Gun: Maverick. As he shared his journey at the Trump Kennedy Center, the entire audience rose to its feet.
