Content warning: This post discusses su***de and death/dying.

Last year, Double Exposure hosted the U.S. premiere of POISONED, directed by Joy Ash with reporting by James Beal.

In POISONED, Ash draws from Beal’s landmark investigation in The Sunday Times and a companion podcast, which exposed a global operation to sell poison to people experiencing suicidal thoughts—many of them young—and the devastating impacts on families across continents. POISONED offers a timely portrait of how digital platforms and international borders create new dangers and disconnects—a new fault line shaping the world and society’s struggle to regulate and respond.

Last week, Kenneth Law pleaded guilty in Ontario to 14 counts of aiding su***de. The deal shelved his prosecution for murder in Canada and the U.K. Law’s sentencing is scheduled for September.

NEXT WEEK!

Democracy on Screen returns to DC with a can’t-miss screening of Words of War.

Directed by James Strong and starring Maxine Peake, the film brings to life the story of fearless journalist Anna Politkovskaya who exposed atrocities during the Chechen Wars and fought relentlessly for an independent press.

Stay after the film for an in-person conversation with Mark Maxey, Emmy award-winning producer and executive at Rolling Pictures, and Paul Beckett, senior editor at The Atlantic.

RSVP today! https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/democracy-on-screen-words-of-war

Stories That Matter™ is BACK and this screening is not to be missed!

Join us next Thursday, April 30 at 6:30 PM at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center for a special screening of Deepfaking Sam Altman, a witty, mind-bending documentary directed by Emmy-nominated Adam Bhala Lough and produced by Emmy-winner Luke Kelly-Clyne.

What starts as a playful exploration of AI quickly spirals into a hilarious (and slightly terrifying) look at the ethical and legal chaos it can unleash.

Stick around after the film for an exclusive panel featuring:
- Director Adam Bhala Lough
- Producer Luke Kelly-Clyne
- Noel King (Vox's Today, Explained, former NPR Morning Edition & Up First)

Moderated by Sig Libowitz, Director of the JHU Graduate Film & Media Program, this event is supported by the Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival.

Spots are limited - RSVP today! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/stories-that-matter-film-screening-of-deepfaking-sam-altman-tickets-1986940257798?aff=DoubleExposureFilmFestival

A quiet heaviness spread through the theater when someone in the audience asked for anyone who had either lost someone to gun violence or had been a victim of it themselves to raise their hand.

Dozens of hands reached into the air.

School shootings are a tragedy that is entirely preventable. That’s exactly why we need incredible filmmakers like Oscar-winning Josh Seftel, and stories like All The Empty Rooms, to help us understand exactly what’s at stake: the lives of our children.

Special thanks to Josh Seftel, Cass Crifasi, Co-Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Mia Tretta, survivor of two school shootings and an inspiring advocate for ending gun violence.

Thank you to Stories That Matter, moderator Sig Libowitz, and the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center for organizing this critical conversation.

Visit Everytown for Gun Safety to get involved in the fight against gun violence. And don’t forget to watch All the Empty Rooms, now streaming on Netflix.

Congratulations to All The Empty Rooms, winner of Best Short Documentary at this year’s Academy Awards!

No parent, educator, or loved one believes it could happen to their kids. Yet day after day, children go off to school, and day after day, some don’t come home. All The Empty Rooms urgently captures the grief of families whose children perished in school shootings.

Last fall, Double Exposure was honored to screen the film and host its producer, Conall Jones, who discussed storytelling as a tool to grieve and combat tragedy. Next week, we’re welcoming director Joshua Seftel to Washington, DC on March 25 for a screening of the film, followed by a Q&A and reception. This complimentary event is hosted by Stories That Matter™ and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center.

Don’t miss this critical conversation about one of our country’s most urgent issues. Congratulations to director Joshua Seftel, winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short for ALL THE EMPTY ROOMS.

Double Exposure was honored to present the Washington premiere of ALL THE EMPTY ROOMS, which follows CBS correspondent Steve Hartman and photographer Lou Bopp. The pair spent months visiting families whose children perished in school shootings, and photographing their untouched bedrooms, emerging with a quietly powerful portrait of enduring grief.

Seftel is back in DC next Wednesday, March 25, when the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center and Graduate Film and Media Program's Stories That Matter series will present ALL THE EMPTY ROOMS. Screening to be followed by a panel discussion with Seftel and other guests and a reception.

Free to attend, but you must register:
