This Saturday, we celebrate a DC legacy. 🖤🎨

ARTIVISM is proud to curate a special one-night gallery honoring Miss Wanda — a DC entrepreneur whose decades of owning and operating Wanda’s on 7th Hair Salon have helped shape the city, its culture, and thousands of lives within it.

Through art exploring beauty, hair, fashion, Black business, entrepreneurship, and DC culture, we’re paying homage to the impact of a woman who built more than a business — she built community.

The gallery opens the evening at DC Art All Night: SHAW, alongside Happy Hour, before the celebration moves from visual art to fashion, music, and community.

✨ 6–7 PM — ARTIVISM Gallery + Happy Hour
👗 7–8 PM — Fashion Show presented by Howard University’s Fashion Department
🎶 8–10 PM — Live Music + Networking

🥁 THE DRUMS ARE CALLING 🌍

For 43 years, KanKouran has brought generations together through the movement, rhythm, history, and traditions of African dance and music.

This weekend, that legacy continues with SUNU GAAL — “Our Boat.”

From September 4–6, dancers, drummers, teachers, companies, and cultural practitioners from across the country and West Africa converge in Washington, DC for the 43rd Annual National African Dance & Drum Conference — one of the largest gatherings of its kind in the United States.

🥁 Three days of African dance & drum workshops
🌍 Artists representing Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Congo & Liberia
🕺🏾 Classes for multiple styles & experience levels

And Saturday night, it all comes to the stage.

🎨 ARTIST CALL — HONORING MISS WANDA

DC artists, we’re calling on you to help us celebrate a true icon of the city.

On September 12, we’re curating a special one-day art exhibition honoring Miss Wanda — a DC entrepreneurial icon whose legacy in the beauty industry represents far more than style. It represents Black creativity, ownership, culture, evolution, and the power to build something of your own.

We’re looking for artwork that explores themes of:

✨ Black beauty & the evolution of beauty in Black culture
🖤 Blackness, identity & self-expression
💄 Hair, beauty & cosmetics
👗 Fashion & personal style
🏛️ Washington, DC culture
💼 Black entrepreneurship & ownership
📸 The past, present & future of Black beauty

The exhibition will take place during ART ALL NIGHT at Sandlot Shaw & Howard, putting your work in front of one of DC’s biggest nights for art and culture.

This is not only an opportunity to exhibit — participating artists will also be able to sell their work during the event.

We welcome painters, photographers, illustrators, mixed-media artists, designers, and other visual artists to submit work that speaks to these themes.

Help us give Miss Wanda her flowers through art. 💐

🚨 A RARE OPPORTUNITY IS COMING TO ARTIVISM 🚨

This Wednesday and Thursday, we’re welcoming the legendary Maestro Curtis and the nationally recognized Curtis Family C-Notes to ARTIVISM for an intimate, two-night Music Theory Masterclass.

Maestro Curtis has spent more than four decades in the music industry, working with icons including Al Green, George Benson, The O’Jays, Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire, and the Count Basie and Duke Ellington Orchestras. Now, our community has the opportunity to learn from that experience up close.

🎼 WEDNESDAY | 8–9:30 PM
Explore the foundations of rhythm, melody, harmony and the musical patterns behind the sounds we love.

🎹 THURSDAY | 6–8 PM
Put theory into practice through live demonstrations, instruments, vocals and collaborative music-making with the Curtis Family C-Notes.

Access to artists and educators of this caliber would normally come at a much higher price. The Curtis Family is gracious enough to make this transformative creative education accessible—but we need the community’s support to keep doing it.
