"The Troika: A Story of Three Families, Friendship, and the Cold War" follows three boys from Communist expatriate families, two German, one American, as they come of age together in Moscow during Stalin's Great Terror. Scattered by WWII, they land on opposite sides of the geopolitical map, each grappling with whether to keep or abandon the ideals instilled in them as young men.

What were Wolf's intentions with this introspective memoir? We'll discuss this question and others in a conversation moderated by Spy Museum Historian Dr. Mark Jacobson with editors Dr. Christian F. Ostermann (National Cold War Center) and Dr. Katharina Friedla (Hoover Institution Library & Archives), and with added insight and context on German intelligence from expert Dr. Hope M. Meet the man behind "Ortiz's War": Author Nicholas Reynolds joins us for an in-store book signing.

Before he became one of the most decorated Marines of World War II, Peter J. Ortiz was a merchant seaman, a lion tamer, a race car driver, and a Hollywood stuntman. As a teenager, he ran away from boarding school to join the French Foreign Legion. By 1944, he was parachuting into Nazi-occupied France on top-secret OSS missions, arming the French Resistance and evading the Gestapo under a rotating cast of covers.

In 2017, journalist Katie Sanders discovered an episode of a radio program called “This Is Your Life.” It was a scratchy recording from 1949, and she heard the voice of 2nd Lt. Murray Simon, her grandfather, for the first time. In the program, Murray was reunited with a man named Peter Ortiz, who had rescued him after his plane crashed over Nazi-occupied France in 1944. Ortiz became one of the most decorated Marine officers of WWII, undertaking missions now handled by units like the Navy SEALs and Green Berets. In this episode, SpyCast host Sasha Ingber discusses Ortiz's story with Sanders, who coauthored the new book "Ortiz's War" with former CIA historian Nicholas Reynolds.

In 1944, American Marine Colonel Peter Ortiz parachuted into Nazi-occupied France. He armed the French Resistance, blew up German infrastructure, and aided downed Allied airmen, all while posing under rotating covers, including as a fashion designer. By the time he escaped across the Pyrenees, he was one of the Gestapo's most wanted men.
