For only five-time finishers of the ODH, there will be a special, 3-day registration period from Sunday, January 28, 5 PM, to Wednesday, January 31, 5 PM. The registration form will request the last five years that the registrant has completed an ODH event (100K, 80K, or 50K, although the 80K is no longer offered). Any registrations during this period for hikers that have not completed at least five ODHs will NOT be valid, regardless of any auto-confirmation email message sent by the system. Register at

Kick-off a training series unlike any training series I've ever seen (thank God!) by joining this Saturday's hike for 8 miles along the C&O Towpath from Carderock to Great Falls and back. Leaders are
Frank Wodarczyk, Gabriele Ludwig, Paul Elliott, and Debra Babarsky.

Weather note: The forecast looks possibly somewhat hopefully perhaps OK depending, with temps in the low to mid 30s. A light rain is expected to start later in the morning and go most of the day after that. There shouldn't be any snow (what's that?) or icing during the hike, but please be careful while driving, especially from/to outer suburbs in the north and west. Pizza afterwards sounds good.

This is an easy out-and-back, go-at-your-own pace hike of up to 8 miles on the C&O Canal towpath along a scenic stretch of the Potomac River between Carderock Recreation Ar

The One Day Hike is indeed scheduled for next year on April 20. So, January 6, we are kicking off our regular ODH training hike series, coordinated by Gary Kosciusko. As always, our training hikes are scheduled on Saturdays (with possible weather exceptions), are open to all (not only ODH hopefuls), are free (donations encouraged), increase progressively in distance (they get longer and longer), have generally flat routes, allow you to go at your own pace, take place near the DC area, and have shorter options on the longer hikes. If hiked, this series is sure to put you in good shape for the ODH!

But this Monday is the 48th Annual New Year's Day Hike is Monday. It’s a traditional 10-mile walk along the C&O Canal towpath in Georgetown with an option for lunch (Dutch treat) afterwards. It’s kind of a training hike for the training hikes.

Hikers (and non) will continue a long tradition (since 1975) by gathering in Georgetown on January 1 to kick off a new year of hiking! Come join old and new friends in ushe

Thanks to all the hikers and volunteers that made this 2023 ODH so memorable. The rain also contributed to its memorability. Thankfully, it was short lived.

Congratulations all the hikers that finished and all the ones that tried really hard to do so. You are truly amazing!

On-line registration for the ODH registration has started at www.bit.ly/ODH2023Register A step-by-step description and other information are posted at www.bit.ly/ODHInfo2023 under “Registration Information.” During registration, you may also make reservations for the shuttle to White’s Ferry (50K’ers) or the return shuttle from the endpoint.

For five-time finishers of the ODH, there will be a 3-day registration period from Mon, Jan 30, 5 PM, to Thu, Feb 2, 5 PM.

The regular registration period will open Feb 9, 5 PM, and will close when the number of registrants reaches 350. Note that the maximum may be attained within a few hours, so plan to register as soon as registration opens.
