The Atlas fosters and presents performances of all kinds in an historic venue. The Atlas is home to adventurous artists, audiences and ideas. The Atlas’ vision is to create a dynamic hub where artists, audiences, seniors, young people, neighbors and arts enthusiasts are actively engaging in and having meaningful conversations about art and ideas. It is the Atlas’ belief that the arts have the capacity to connect people and create understanding and respect among them and build a stronger community for all.

How are Washington DC and Brazil's Salvador Bahia connected? All is revealed in Afrocidade, a unique, original, and entertaining performance exploring in music, song, dance and stories, the shared culture and history between these seemingly very different places.

Powered by a 10 piece ensemble of musicians, vocalists, dancers and narrators, Afrocidade interprets the music of popular Bahian artists like Gilberto Gil, Olodum, Caetano Velloso, Luedji Luna and more to recount the explosion of Black consciousness in Salvador from its onset with the Samba ensemble Ile Aiye in 1974 to the present.

A musical production that is more than a concert and not quite a musical, Afrocidade is a real time cultural bridge, an elegy to ancestry, a revelation of erased history and a clarion call for a better, more empathetic future.

Dorothy becomes Reina in this fresh take on The Wizard of Oz from Brian Quijada, the award-winning co-creator and star of Mexodus, which premiered at Mosaic ahead of back-to-back Off-Broadway runs. Inspired by the true story of his mother’s immigration in the 1970s, Somewhere over the Border takes audiences on a musical journey from El Salvador to America featuring cumbia, Mexican mariachi boleros, rock, hip hop, and more! As Reina travels north to the Mexican border, she gathers friends, faces down dangers, and holds tight to the memory of the little boy she left behind to build a better life for them both. With equal parts joyful whimsy and harrowing truth, Somewhere Over the Border is a timely new musical that honors the grit and resilience of the immigrant’s journey and reminds us of the humanity of all our neighbors.
