This is a long one…read if you want to learn!
I have debated for a number of weeks how to share the effect the April freezes have had on some of our crops. We experienced significant loss in our field tulip crop, a huge loss in our peony crop and a large setback in our crops in general.

About the photos
Picture 1 shows the inside of an aborted peony bud
Picture 2 shows a healthy bud, just a little deformed

On April 8 we experienced sub FREEZING temps for hours that impacted both tulips and peonies
Again on April 21 sub FREEZING temps for hours that impacted mid season peonies
Both of these freezing events came after a few days of extreme warmth that pushed new tender growth on the plants.

Thankfully I have been around agriculture all my life and I knew the risks when I chose to farm as a way of life. For me…This year is about being grateful for ALL that I have and get to experience while building resilience for the future.

Unofficially we lost 30-40% of our tulip crop and approximately 80% of our peony crop. I say unofficial because it is a rough guess at this point and the exact number is not important to dwell on.
1. Our farm will be fine, we still have beautiful flowers to sell, amazing customers and a portion of our growing season yet to come!
2. We have not been affected to the extent of the fruit growers in our area. Many tree fruit growers will not have much of a crop to harvest this year.
3. This is a great learning experience for all of us- let’s find ways to support our local farmers and the food and flowers they are producing on their farms this year!

Thank you for choosing to support local agriculture!
And for reading all the way to the end!

My appreciation for every stem of peonies is greater this year! Why? Because 2 nights of freezing temperatures in April damaged many of our peony buds.
Thankfully we have some to enjoy this season!

Disappointment and hope- many times you don’t have one without the other. I’ve had a few disappointments through the roller coaster of temps the last few weeks- frozen lilacs, frozen and aborted tulips, frozen peonies, heat stressed ranunculus…I think you get the idea.
At the same time we have many plants looking great despite the roller coaster- so I’m choosing to focus on what I can do: mowing pathways, planting the next blooms, tending the good plants, filling orders, pulling weeds, etc. I tell myself I’m building resilience for my future!

Thank you! Happy Easter! Enjoy your flowers and your families!Swipe to see the after…many empty buckets
