"Swimmers in has to equal swimmers out. Otherwise it's game over."
That's Elaine Kornbau Howley. Marathon swimmer. Expert crew member. Award-winning author. And one of the most experienced and well-rounded people in the open water community.
This sport is not a risk-free endeavor. She's not pretending it is. But there are common sense things that can be done — methodically — to keep people safe and keep this sport alive.
At BTB 2026 Elaine will be part of the Massachusetts Open Water Swimming Association Safety Panel Discussion. A session that every swimmer, coach, race director, and support crew member in this community needs to be in the room for.
Because the best way to kill a swim is to kill a swimmer!
