"The Biggest Small Town Celebration in Otter Tail County"
Every year on the third Saturday in August, the tiny town of Vining, Minnesota (population 62) transforms into a bustling place of fun, family and small-town spirit - welcoming thousands of visitors for Vining Watermelon Day.
This one-of-a-kind celebration is where families, friends, neighbors and strangers who will soon become friends, gather to enjoy a full day of activities, entertainment and sweet summertime tradition.
The What:
🏃♀️ 5K/10K "Run for the Melon" - Start the day strong! Proceeds support the OTC Cross Country Team🏃
🎨 Art & Craft Vendors - Local artists, vendors and makers line the streets with treasures and finds
☕ Coffee 33 - Service with a smile and a jump start!
⛹️♂️ 3rd Annual 3v3 Basketball Tournament - Proceeds benefit the Jacob Quam Foundation🏀
🌭 Food Vendors - Delicious eats available all around town, including Vining's very own Purple Palace, Big Foot Gas & Grocery and the Vining Grill🍧
🎈 Children's games and NASA kids project - Fun & Learning 🚀
🎴 Bean Bag Tournament - Friendly competition and plenty of laughs
🏎 Car Show - Toot your horn for these classics
🅱️8️⃣ BINGO! - A community favorite with prizes and good company
🏦 Vining History Center - Discover the local heritage
🎉 Parade - A main street tradition filled with music, local businesses, sponsors, volunteers, organizations and candy. Lots of Candy! 🍬
🎸 Live Music - End the day dancing and singing along to tunes!
And of course - FREE delicious WATERMELON is served all day long! 🍉
The Why:
Vining Watermelon Day is more than just a celebration—it's a way to bring people together and share in the simple joys of small-town life with a big-time spirit. What began as a gathering of neighbors has grown into a sweet annual tradition that folks look forward to year after year. It’s a day to stroll our streets, discover something new, and reconnect with the charm of the old.
This event not only celebrates community—it invests in it. Proceeds go directly back into Vining, supporting initiatives like new flags, town beautification, park equipment, public spaces, and the Vining Fire Department.
