Bravo! Chorale | Jazz Quartet
Maria Manzo, Conductor

Duke Ellington - The Sacred Concert

Aaron Copland - Concerto for Clarinet
John Williams - Simple Gifts Suite
American Spirituals

bravoconcerts.com (http://www.bravoconcerts.com)

This concert features three icons of American music. Duke Ellington composed The Sacred Concert in 1965-66. It was premiered at San Francisco’s Episcopal Grace Cathedral during the Civil Rights movement. Ellington said he was “bringing the Cotton Club R***e to church!” Aaron Copland composed his Clarinet Concerto for jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman. Copland blended jazz and classical styles to create a ‘crossover’ piece for Goodman – much like Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Film composer John Williams wrote Simple Gifts Suite for the election ceremony of Barack Obama. Also on the concert: Spirituals by the great American composers Jester Hairston & William Dawson. The 16-voice Bravo! Chorale & Jazz Ensemble are led by Conductor Maria Manzo, with clarinetist Michael Kissinger.
