IAFF MDA Softball Championship

IAFF MDA Softball Championship USSSA World Series IAFF 1619 MDA Softball Tournament. The International Association of Firefighters and Muscular Dystrophy Association Fight for a cure!

In September, during the week after Labor Day, over one hundred teams of firefighters and paramedics come together from all over the United States and Canada to play softball and raise money to fight neuromuscular diseases. It is the largest gathering of firefighters and paramedics outside of the International’s Biennial Convention. The event had humble beginnings with only ten teams participatin

g in the first tournament in 1973 at White Marsh Park. Retired Major Danny Jarboe, Firefighter Paul Trader, and Jack Mowatt, of DC ASA, organized the early years of the tournament. They started the tournament as a memorial to Brother Gary Provencal, of the old “P Street” team. It would now take several pages to name all of the individuals have shaped the tournament into the nationally respected event that it is today. For the past nineteen years the tournament has been held at Watkins Regional Park in Kettering. Maryland Park and Planning graciously took the event in after the second home, Rip’s Fields, was closed down. The tournament lost some of its “Wild West” feel after moving to such a nice location, but it has never stopped being an outrageously good time of softball, food, good friends, and just a “few” beers. Teams have traveled from all over the United States and Canada to participate in this memorable event. Opening ceremonies include introductions from the IAFF General President, IAFF Local 1619 President, the Prince George’s County Executive, and various guest speakers. Following the opening remarks, guests are invited to view a fireworks presentation immediately followed by a night of dancing at the pavilion. Over the years this tournament has become an institution for our union and for MDA. Besides the fun, sport, and camaraderie that takes place each year as teams of fire fighters from across the U.S. and Canada gather in Watkins Park for competitive softball, this tournament continues to provide substantial support for MDA and Jerry's Kids. During the last fourty one years the MDA Softball Tournament and related functions have allowed the Prince George’s County Professional Firefighters to donate over $1.7 million dollars to Jerry’s Kids. As far as can be documented, we are the first local to be able to make that claim. A substantial share of MDA research funding is provided by the International Association of Fire Fighters. Since 1954, the IAFF has raised over $220 million for muscular dystrophy research and is the largest national sponsor of the MDA.

To the teams, we ask that you please share the following:

Andrew, an outfielder with Buffalo Fire, and his family are going through a challenging time. Please consider sharing their story to help raise awareness, and most importantly, keep Andrew, Codi, and their precious baby in your thoughts and prayers during this unimaginable time.

Thank you for your support.

Thier story...

Codi and Andrew’s journey has been filled with both hope and heartbreak. When Codi became pregnant with twins, their family was overjoyed. However, their world changed when the twins developed twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, a rare and serious condition. The family traveled to New York City for a life-saving surgery, hoping for the best outcome. Despite their courage and the efforts of the medical team, the surgery was not successful, and Codi had to deliver the babies at just 24 weeks gestation.

Shortly after delivery, they experienced the unimaginable loss of Baby B. Now, Baby A continues to fight bravely in the NICU, surrounded by the love and strength of Codi and Andrew. The family remains in NYC, facing mounting medical bills, travel, and lodging expenses as they support Baby A through every moment of his fight.

We are reaching out to ask for your prayers and positive thoughts for Codi, Andrew, and their family. Your support—whether through a donation or by sharing their story—means the world to them as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. Thank you for standing with them and helping to ease their burden.

It is with great sadness that the Tournament Committee announces the passing of one of our longest-standing members, John “Tubby” Beck, on Tuesday, October 13, 2025.

John was 82 years old and faithfully served as one of the tournament bankers throughout the weekend events. Last year, we had the privilege of honoring Mr. Beck for his countless and tireless hours of dedication to the tournament — a true testament to his commitment and love for this event.

His presence, humor, and friendship will be deeply missed by all who knew him. To his family and friends we greatly will miss him and we offer our sincerest condolences on his passing.

Once service arrangements are announced, we will share that information with everyone.

We have tried and tried but Mother Nature doesn’t want to help this year. There is no way the fields can be ready for play today. So unfortunately we have to make the decision to Cancel today’s play.

This is the conclusion of the softball play for this years tournament.

The bar is still open for today and for Sunday football!

The kitchen is selling cases of frozen food for half price. So come down here and get some food!

2 hour delay! All games are being delayed 2 hours while the fields are being worked on. Another update will come after we evaluate the fields again.
