Take a moment to read about the amazing life of Dr. Richard W. Fredericks.

He was an incredible veterinarian, horseman, and all-around amazing human.

Cornell Polo sends our condolences and well-wishes to all of his family, friends, and connections.

On behalf of Cornell Polo …

We regretfully inform you of the passing of Dr. Richard W. “Dick” Fredericks (B. A. ‘65, DVM ‘69) on Thursday, May 14, 2026.

Dr. Fredericks was a second-generation Cornell Polo player, longtime supporter, and friend to all of polo.

He spent his career in veterinary medicine at his farm and Veterinary Hospital on Long Island, and later continued to champion the sport as the owner of Flying Cow Polo Club in Wellington, FL.

He was inducted into the Cornell Polo Wall of Honor in 2025.

Continuing his amazing legacy, his son Dr. Russell Fredericks (DVM ‘96), and his grandson Harrison Fredericks (CALS ‘26) also played for the Big Red and are a part of the Cornell Polo Family.

He will be terribly missed by all who knew him.

On a more personal note, I really enjoyed getting to know him, his witty and humorous banter, his jokes, and genuinely appreciate his unwavering support of me and of Cornell Polo.

Rest In Peace, Sir.

Our 2026 Iron Horse, Belle, is off to her well-deserved retirement. She has been a stalwart in our women’s string since 2017, and joins her pasture mate, Antonia, at Oxley Maintenance Mechanic Billy’s farm.

Enjoy your retirement, Belle, we love you! Thank you for being an integral part of the Cornell Polo program. ❤️🐴

Friends of Cornell Polo: We are looking to ship one horse from Ithaca, NY to Dallas, TX. We can arrange to ship her within the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, or Southeast US to meet up with a hauler headed to Texas. Getting the horse to OK or AR may work as well, where she can be picked up by her new owner. PM us for questions or if you can offer to help. Thank you!

This weekend's events closing remarks contained a purposeful theme, and we're very proud of the message we conveyed. Here is the speech penned by Vicki Taylor Brous and Peter B. Orthwein '68 Head Coach of Polo Anthony Condo, for those who were not there to hear it. We hope you enjoy it, and that it resonates for each and every one of our Cornell Polo alumni out there. Come join us in the future for a fun-filled weekend of memories, stories, laughs, and (happy) tears.

This weekend, Cornell Polo celebrated our annual Spring Banquet and Awards Ceremony, along with our 2026 Wall of Honor Induction Ceremony. Four new members were inducted in esteemed Cornell Polo Wall of a Honor - where those who have made outstanding contributions to Cornell Polo over time are recognized in perpetuity. Thanks to Vicki Brous' generosity and her carpentry skills, we also unveiled the Wall in a new format, with an refreshed, modern design.

This year's Wall of Honor Inductees are:

Glenn Armstrong, '67
James Greenwell, '67
Guillermo Sanz de Santamaria, '67
Anna Winslow Palacios '16

In addition, in this, the occasion of the 60th anniversary year, the accomplishments of the 1966 Men's National Intercollegiate Championship were recognized, with 5 members of that team in attendance, to include three new Wall of Honor members, and their teammates Peter B. Orthwein '68 and Dale Chambers '66, both of whom were elected to the Wall of Honor in previous years.

We also recognized Peter B. Orthwein's long-term and wide-ranging support of our program, including the endowment of the Peter B. Orthwein Head Coach of Polo position, which has allowed for the continued success and operation of the program through its return.

We closed out the weekend with our student-awards ceremony and Senior recognition. The award winners were announced as follows:

Jorie F. Butler Trophy – Outstanding Senior Women's Player: Lara Chong

Earle B. Hopper Memorial Trophy – Outstanding Senior Men's Player: Benito Jaramillo
