Catch more than just barefooting in Groveland on March 29 — the Great Groveland Barefoot Laps Challenge is part of Groveland’s Founder’s Day celebration. To honor the city’s rich history, which is rooted in water sports, we’re hosting “Legacy on the Lake: A Groveland Water Sports Showcase” to bring Groveland’s rich water sports heritage to the forefront of the action.

Lake David has launched world champions, shattered records, and set the stage for waterskiing and wakeboarding legends since the 1970s. From the iconic Liz Allan’s All-Stars to elite training at Benzel Ski Center and Hansen’s World Wakeboard Center, Lake David’s waters have seen it all.

And now, in 2025, the barefoot endurance battles are joined by more water sports action:

The Great Groveland Barefoot Laps Challenge is returning to the Sunshine state on Saturday, March 29 for Groveland’s Founder’s Day community festival.

A nod to the classic barefoot lap endurance contest, this contest is a test to see who can barefoot the longest around Lake David. The twist: after the second full lap, the boat will decrease speed by 2 mph and continue to decrease speed by 2 mph on every lap until the skier falls.  

Anyone can sign-up to compete. AND, barefoot suits are allowed.

This past weekend, a fire devastated their kitchen, leaving them closed indefinitely. Our friends—the amazing team and management—need help to rebuild and recover.

🔥 The current 2024 Great Groveland Barefoot Laps Challenge riding order is live! 🔥

Been on the fence and not sure if you want to compete, now is your time to lock in your spot. Online registration is closing around 8 p.m. ET tonight so we can finish prepping registration materials to keep on schedule. Day-of registration will see an added $10 fee.

ABOUT FEET ON FIRE

Feet on Fire—a 32-man, head-to-head barefoot endurance contest—is one of the most anticipated contests among competitors and spectators alike.

It’s main rule: no barefoot/wet suits allowed, only a pair of shorts and a flotation device. Unlike most endurance barefoot contests, Feet on Fire is comprised of an invite-only list of elite athletes from a broad spectrum of towed watersports, including wakeboarders, wakeskaters, traditional waterskiers, show skiers, stunt men and industry veterans.

Expanding nationwide in 2018, Feet on Fire South took place May 23 at The Waterfront restaurant on Lake Jennie Jewel in Orlando. Feet on Fire North will be held Friday, August 17 at the Twin Lakes CornFest – Music & Waterski Showcase, located at Lance Park.
