Here are some snapshots of one of our staging rehearsals for our production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific, Sat., June 13, 7pm, and Sun., June 14, 3pm, in the magnificent Art Deco venue, Will Rogers Auditorium, 3909 E 5th Place, in Tulsa. Our orchestra dress rehearsal last night was marvelous.

Technically, this is a concert version of this classic 1949 winner of 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and a Pulitzer Prize for James Michener's "Tales of the South Pacific," in 1950. As you can see from these photos, this is not a typical concert version with no costumes or scenery, actors and singers seated on the stage, standing only when it is their turn to deliver their lines or songs, and carrying their scripts. We commissioned 11 scenery backdrops that are projected on a giant cyclorama, above the orchestra.

Our all-professional cast stars former Tulsan Bernardo Medeiros, an operatic baritone living in New York and on the national circuit, as French planter Emile de Becque, and Margaret Stall, who has been heard in a variety of roles in opera and musical theatre throughout the Midwest, as Navy ensign nurse Nellie Forbush.

Other principals include local favorite Sam Briggs as Marine Lt. Joseph Cable, South Korea native Haena Jeong as local entrepreneur Bloody Mary, and Michael Padgett as conniving sailor Luther Billis. The show's producer, Dick Risk, plays island commander Capt. George Brackett. Michael Minick is his executive officer, Commander William Harbison. Joelle Galapate-Ikpo, a dancer and choreographer and former San Antonio Spurs cheerleader, plays Mary's daughter, Liat.

Grade-schoolers Gabe Summerlin and Jane Nguyen play Emile's children with a late Polynesian woman, Jerome and Ngana.

A 29-piece orchestra comprised of the finest regional players, led by Maestro Lyndon Meyer, plays the original 1949 Broadway score with the exact same instrumentation. Veteran actress and stage director Karlena Riggs has created an innovative adaptation for this 1939 auditorium.
