Tyson’s Smith: From Academics to Industry…Trust and Integrity Are Key in Leadership

“Who we are is a lot more important than what we do. Integrity, innovation, interpersonal skills, resilience and servant leadership are some of the important things that are necessary to be a good leader and are integral to success in business,” stated Donnie Smith, President and CEO, Tyson Foods, and keynote speaker at the 2013 IPPE College Student Career Program. Smith provided personal insight to more than 400 students from 25 universities about Transitioning from Academics to Industry. The annual program, held in conjunction with the International Poultry Expo, is sponsored by the USPOULTRY Foundation.

2013 IPPE Antibiotic Conference: Alternatives to Antibiotics and Future of Antibiotic Usage

More restrictions on antibiotic use in food animals are inevitable, and the search for alternatives has to take into account the integrity of both the upper and lower intestinal tracts. A shift in the understanding of where in the intestinal tract nutrients become available to the bird is important in devising an effective new antimicrobial strategy, said Dr. Stephen R. Collett of the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center at the University of Georgia, as part of his presentation on organic acids, held during the second day of the Antibiotic Conference – Current Issues for the Poultry & Egg Industry at the 2013 International Production & Processing Expo.

The composition of the microbiota in the lower intestine determines the bird’s long-term performance, and an unfavorable environment in the lower gut will influence the upper gut, which has more effect on short-term performance. Management options include accelerating the evolution of the intestinal microbiota, rehabilitating it after a disturbance using the “seed, feed, and weed” process, and immune modulation.

$5-plus Corn and $300-plus Soybean Meal Is the New Normal

The new normal for animal feed costs will be at least $5 corn and $300 soybean meal, according to Thomas Elam of FarmEcon during his presentation on the Economic State of the Industry. He was speaking at the Meat and Poultry Research Conference held at the 2013 International Production and Processing Expo. The conference was co-sponsored by the American Meat Institute, U.S. Poultry & Egg Association, the American Meat Science Association, and the Poultry Science Association.

“Will we see $10 corn and $650 soybean meal?” Elam questioned. “It’s very possible. Also, $5 corn and $300 soybean meal is equally probable.” But, he believes those are minimums in the future. “We will continue to see volatile feed costs for the next 18-20 months,” Elam continued. “There will be no significant change through March and April. Then, it will depend on the weather this summer. If there is no rain again this year, we’re in serious trouble. And, there has not been enough snow this winter so far. Then, there is the ethanol squeeze.”

Future of the U.S. Egg Industry: A Look at the Global and Economic Impact of Egg Legislation

In his presentation on the Global Impact of Animal Welfare Legislation, Professor Hans-Wilhelm Windhorst, International Egg Commission economist, described the effects of the conventional layer cage system ban in Germany in 2010. Windhorst was speaking at the Future of the U.S. Egg Industry education program, held during the 2013 International Production & Processing Expo. The program was sponsored by United Egg Producers and U.S. Poultry & Egg Association.

According to Windhorst, the ban resulted in a loss of egg production, necessitating that eggs for consumption be imported. The ban also forced many farms into foreclosure and took some time for the egg industry to recover. Windhorst further remarked that “the cost of transforming to new housing in Germany was 1.2 billion” and encouraged the egg industry to be transparent and show consumers that birds are not being harmed.
