John J. McGraw Historic Field Marker Dedication

Educating our future generations about Truxton’s history and John J. McGraw, Bill Swisher met with Truxton Academy Charter students to share a quick history of hometown hero John J. McGraw and the events that took place on August 8, 1938 in the town of Truxton, NY.

The 1938 New York Giants played a baseball game against the local Truxton Giants at the John J. McGraw field. After the game they were treated by the ever curteous Truxtonites to a dinner and entertainment at the Truxton Central School, now the Truxton Academy Charter School.

To commemorate the event, Bill Swisher donated a plaque which is now on display at the school which shows the New York Giants team members, three of whom became Hall of Famers, as well as a photo of the school at the time.

Here’s to keeping history in our towns and communities alive and well!

Here is something really neat, a 1913 World Series program cover featuring New York Giants manager John McGraw shaking hands with appears to be a colonial Philadelphian. Some of John J. McGraw's family @ the Truxton Depot. I believe Barbara is a cousin to John and the three gentlemen are great nephews.

The musical entertainment for yesterday's event was provided by Songs of the Game. We located Mark West, the author of the song Ballad of John McGraw, through a Google search, which brought a spark to the event. Mark West, along with Don Neuman and Bryan Kauffman, traveled from Missouri to provide remarkable sound and camera work that will be featured in an upcoming YouTube documentary.
