WHERE DID THE “HALF-SHIRE” NAME COME FROM?

The term “Half-Shire” comes from Troy’s unique role in the 1800s as a secondary county seat in Bradford County, sharing court responsibilities with Towanda. A “shire town” is an old term for a county seat, and because Troy handled only part of the county’s court business—holding sessions twice a year—it became known as a “Half-Shire.” This arrangement made legal services more accessible at a time when travel was difficult. Chosen for its central location and growing importance, Troy played a key role in connecting the community. Its courthouse, the Van Dyne Civic Building, is recognized as the site of Pennsylvania’s only “half-shire” courthouse. Today, that same spirit lives on as Troy continues to bring people together through events like the Half-Shire Festival, celebrating its rich history and strong sense of community.
