In a quarry near Cairo, New York, paleontologists uncovered the fossilized remains of a 386-million-year-old forest, making it one of the oldest known forests on Earth. The discovery revealed trees unlike anything alive today strange, alien-looking plants with fronds instead of leaves and unusual branching structures that challenge our understanding of early ecosystems.

What makes this site even more intriguing is the connection to a local Iroquois legend. Long before science identified the fossilized trees, the legend spoke of that very spot as the “first garden,” a place where the “stone trees” of the sky-woman’s world were planted. For years, such stories were dismissed as myth or folklore, detached from natural history.

Yet the paleontological evidence suggests a curious overlap: the Iroquois tradition may, in some way, preserve a cultural memory of ancient landscapes. Whether coincidence or something deeper, this alignment between indigenous storytelling and prehistoric science highlights the enduring human instinct to explain and connect with the world even across spans of hundreds of millions of years.

Now that the dust has settled, and I can think a little clearer, I would like to extend much gratitude to everyone who helped to make the Spirit of the wolf native American festival and powwow a HUGE Success!!! Starting with the Supply Wagon for providing support and such a beautiful venue. Thank you to all the volunteers, vendors, drum, dancers, Aztec fire dancers, flute players, north country wildcare, Whispering willow birds of prey. and public. Without all of you, this event would not have been possible. It was stressful to return after so many years, but due to all the teamwork, we made it happen. We have a few kinks to work out. Like parking first before paying to get in, to reduce the traffic holdup. Getting ATM on site. We also have to apologize to the public if anyone was upset about the live beaver show canceling. Circumstances beyond anyone's control happen, especially with animals, that could change plans. We replaced that show with the birds of prey, which was equally entertaining. We are already discussing new ways to entertain the kiddos. Sounding very new, different, and promising. We are BACK and strong. Stay tuned for updates on next year's event.
