Topsham Fair in the Early 1900s

By 1900, the Topsham Fair was already a long-standing Maine tradition. The first fair was held in 1855 by what was then called the Sagadahoc Agricultural and Horticultural Society. Its purpose was to celebrate local farming and encourage improvements in livestock, crops, produce and rural craftsmanship.

During the early 1900s, visitors would have arrived at a fair very different from today’s midway. The grounds centered around agricultural exhibitions, livestock judging, produce displays, handmade goods and horse racing. Maine’s early agricultural fairs also offered premiums and prizes for the best animals and crops, making the fair an important yearly gathering for local farming families.

Harness racing was already an important attraction. The historic wooden grandstand had been built during the 1860s and was standing beside the racing oval throughout the early 1900s. A postcard from approximately 1914 shows the grandstand in nearly its present configuration. It is now recognized as one of Maine’s rare surviving 19th-century fairground grandstands.

Meet the topsham fair committee board.

Let me introduce you to Toby Conroy. Our current Director of Entertainment for the Topsham Fair.
Toby started with Topsham Fair as a vendor and volunteer a few years back.
In fact Toby has volunteered over 18 years of time in his hometown of Lisbon. From 12 yrs as a Coordinator for the once hugely popular Moxie Festival (leaving his mark with the annual Fireworks and Moxie Chugging Challenge)to time on the Advisory Board, Steering Committee and volunteer for the former Teen Center, The Lisbon Historical Society and The former Green Thumb Gang to name a few.
His goal is to expand the Entertainment Offerings during the fair by hiring new and talented artists to encompass all ages while keeping the schedule lively. He is hoping to add more locations for entertainment within the grounds to expand his vision of spreading good energy throughout the fair and create an environment reaching more audience opportunities.

🎶 Live Music at the 2026 Topsham Fair! 🎶

We are excited to welcome Ross Cunningham to the Area 3 Stage with his show “Songs You Remember.”

Ross brings a heartfelt live music experience filled with timeless classics from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, featuring music made famous by artists like Elvis Presley, John Denver, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and more.

The sale that had been planned for this weekend unfortunately has to be canceled due to unforeseen circumstances, and it is rescheduled for July 18.

Meet the Topsham Fair Committee Board

Today we would like to introduce Stephanie Smith from East Dixfield, Maine.

Stephanie, along with her husband Matt, has a long history with the Topsham Fair. She first started out showing dairy through 4-H at the Topsham Fair, and over the years continued attending with her family’s dairy and beef cattle. Her children also grew up showing at Topsham, making the fair a meaningful family tradition.

Stephanie worked alongside the former Livestock Superintendent for about five years before stepping into the role herself. As Livestock Superintendent, her goal is to keep the livestock shows going strong, continue growing them, and help make sure agriculture remains an important part of the Topsham Fair for future generations.

Exciting news for the Topsham Fair!

We are excited to announce that Pine Tree Helicopters will be joining us at the Topsham Fair this year, offering helicopter rides with an incredible view of the fairgrounds from above.

This will be a unique chance to see the fair from a whole new perspective, with the rides, barns, grandstand, midway, and fairgrounds all below you.

Bring the family, make a memory, and experience the Topsham Fair from the sky!

We would like to remind everyone that the Topsham Fair grounds are private property and unauthorized motor vehicles are not permitted to be used on the Topsham Fairgrounds unless approved by the fair board.

Please be respectful of the grounds, the property, the members and volunteers who work hard to maintain and improve the fairgrounds throughout the year.

If you are on the grounds, please clean up after yourself, take any trash with you, and leave the property the way you found it.

The Topsham Fairgrounds are here for the community, and we appreciate everyone doing their part to help keep them clean, safe, and respected.
