Today, members from UAW Region 2B joined brothers and sisters from across the state in Columbus for the "Healthcare for All Ohioans" conference. Our message was clear: Everybody In, Nobody Out!
Healthcare is one of the biggest reasons our members are forced onto the picket line. It creates a "have and have-not" divide between those with retiree healthcare and those without. Even for those with coverage, rising premiums are eating up the raises we work so hard to negotiate. The U.S. pays the most in the world for healthcare, yet we keep seeing diminished returns.
We support those who support us. We are standing with:
State Senator Paula Hicks-Hudson, sponsor of SB 78
State Representative Michele Grim, sponsor of HB 289
These bills would create a statewide single-payer system, cutting out the insurance middlemen who profit by denying our care. This is a fight for a healthier Ohio at a lower cost.
The stakes couldn't be higher. Recently, the federal "One Big Beautiful Bill" slashed healthcare funding by $1 trillion, an unprecedented move that puts our most vulnerable at risk.
Unions have always led the way on social and economic justice—and this fight is both. We must call out any politician who takes money from the insurance machine; they can't take their checks and claim to be on our side.
On my way back, I stopped to see our brothers and sisters at the Local 1327 strike line. Their fight is—you guessed it—over healthcare. Their spirits are high, and their resolve is unbreakable.
At our last Toledo Area CAP Council meeting, the membership allocated up to $5000 to help these members! The Region matched our $5000. This is your CAP dollars at work! We will keep you informed with their progress.
In Solidarity,
Tony
