Finch Community Festival The Finch Preaching Mission was established in 1959 through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Doak Finch. "Their works do follow them." Revelation 14:13

The Finch Preaching Mission provides a special opportunity annually for Memorial United Methodist Church to bring dynamic preaching personalities to Thomasville so that people will be reached for Christ and the Body of Christ renewed for God’s miss A trust fund was instituted in such a manner that the annual income could be used to bring dynamic pulpit personalities to Thomasville. Additional fund

s have been added to the trust so that the income could keep pace with rising costs. The spirit of both Doak and Agnes Finch remain very much a part of the Mission and an inspiration to all persons who knew them. The Finch Preaching Mission is but one of a multitude of ways in which their Christian witness remains among us.

Memorial United Methodist Church is pleased to announce its Summer 2023 Finch Community Festival. In addition to Food Trucks, Vacation Bible School, storyteller Tracy Radosevic, the musical component of this year’s Festival will be a community sing of Buryl Red’s “Celebrate Life!”

We’ll gather on Friday, 23 June 2023 from 7:30pm-9:00pm to sing through the score and hit some high spots, then again on Saturday, 24 June from 9:00am-11:30am to do more of the same. We’ll break for lunch at 11:30am, then gather to sing with orchestra at 1:00pm.

The purpose of this community sing is to gather and make some live music happen together and ENJOY being part of the process. While we will be glad for folks to join us to listen, the main emphasis is participation in the music-making. The past few years have been quite trying for all singers and choirs with the challenges presented by CV19: our opportunities to gather in large groups to sing were limited. It is our hope to build a real-time sense of community and Christian partnership in joining together to sing this work, and to have a great time and memorable musical experience in doing so.

“Celebrate Life!” was originally written in 1972 with an updated version released in 1998. It has been learned and presented by multiple generations in many different iterations since its composition --- many churches still have copies of the scores tucked somewhere in their library. Our hope is to have a multi-generational choir to present this together --- some older members may have sung it when it was “new” while younger members would be able to learn this old favorite that tells the story of the life of Christ with a vernacular spin still relevant today.

We hope you and your friends and family members will consider joining us for this --- it promises to be a lot of fun and a wonderful opportunity to connect with others and make music together.
