The following statement is from Andy’s family, Jean Leach-Stewart, Lyn Stewart and Steve Stewart:
We are heartbroken to share the tragic news of Andy Stewart’s passing yesterday. He was 64 years old and a pillar in the running community as a coach, successful running store owner and esteemed race director. Several months ago, Andy began suffering from a severe bout of depression that spiraled quickly, of which he could not overcome despite medical help. The family hopes an autopsy will provide greater clarity. Andy loved everything about running, opening Finish Line Sports in 1985 and then holding several races a year, including the 30K and Sugar Land Turkey Trot. He was extremely generous to the charities he supported with each race, and always did more than just donate money by giving his time and sharing his heart.
He was a sponsor of Fort Bend Fit since its inception and loved speaking with group members about anything related to running and races. But Andy’s biggest smiles came when he worked with kids of all ages at his youth camps. He considered it a true calling.
Jean, Lyn and Steve urge anyone who has a family member or friend suffering from mental illness of any kind, please reach out to them and do everything possible, as they did for their beloved Andy.
Andy leaves behind his wife, Jean; daughter, Caitlin, brother, Steve; and sister, Lyn, as well as numerous cousins and friends who are too many to count. Andy was a devoted and loving husband who cherished his wife and daughter. He was the best big brother a person could have, always making sure we knew family was first. Please keep the Stewart family in your prayers as they navigate through this excruciatingly tough time.
