Finally a day off when it isn't pouring rain (or snow). Got down to #6 and cleared the branches away that were obstructing the throwing lanes from the tee, so, there is actually a good (uphill) hyzer line, as well as a line under the walnut trees again. Took the chainsaw to some fallen logs, so I might be able to get the ATV up to #7's basket....and hence closer to where #8's tee is. Hoping to get a rubber mat up there RSN. Hope the gravel delivery is soon too, because wood chips are too springy under the mats, until they've gotten good and wet and broken down some, and #8's tee will need some work to get it pseudo level.

So Julian Peterson and guest stopped into to savor the flavor of the course, on a day that was beautiful to play. Played the first 12 holes before they had to run. Highlight of the round for me was a drop in 2 on #8 (disc couldn't get under the basket because of the rocks, but otherwise was as close as it could get short of being in the basket.) We won't talk about the 9 I took on #7. Or some of the other uglies I managed...Oh, I did have a chance (45 foot putt) for the 3 on #12, after my 2nd shot went just past the basket. Sadly, I just missed, and had to settle for the par 4.

Winter has prevented course work for...well since November. Finally got out today, and resumed work on opening up 13's fairway. Some pines cut down, lot of cedar branches removed. All chipped up and chips used for (pseudo) leveling of 14s tee. There is much more to do, but at least now it isn't just a wall of tree branches, there is actually a low path (5-6 feet high) there. Tomorrow, I'll be resuming work, but with the polesaw to lift up that flight path. Lefties will be able to lay up short of this wall, and then do a huge spike hyzer over the trees to get to the basket. Righties...will be playing for the 4.

Timber has been doing me a HUGE favor crafting up the map for the course. It's not finished yet, this is just a draft, but it's looking great. And when folk play, if there are any mistakes, please blame me, not Tim. Honestly, experience in map making really shows, with this.

In the meantime, I've been carving and chipping the trees and branches on number 13. Right now I have scent of pine and cedar cologne.

I carelessly left my phone behind, so no pictures. Spent a few hours with a hatchet taking out pine branches on 10 & 11. Looking much better (except now there are branches on the ground all over the place). Pine branches come off easily with the hatchet. Cedar branches not so much. Hoping to get the ATV back so I can get a tee pad down to 11's tee. As well as get the wood chipper down there to deal with some of the branches (and to build up the tee area so it isn't quite as much of a run up hill.) 2 more holes to do branch work on, and 3 holes to get the rubber mats to the tee location.

Weekend should be great weather (especially for November) to get more course work done. No volunteers to assist (beyond some non-disc golfing neighbors) so, no complaints will be accepted on course facilities or design...

Yellow Wingstem. These aren't quite before and after pictures, but in the first one you can see how thick the stuff is. In the second picture, I've knocked most of it down on the fairway for this particular hole, so now there are some flight lanes (btw, on this picture you're looking from the landing zone back towards the invisible tee. The basket is behind me, and considerably up hill from this spot.)

Found a disc a bit off the, current, beaten path. I wonder whose it is.

Haven't been posting much. Concentrating on keeping the fields mowed, and working on swapping out the Titan portable baskets for Chainstar Pro portables. There is one flower that has been agressively taking over some of the fields. Finally got around to identifying it (I think). Wingstem. Gets pretty tall (6-8 feet), which means I have to stay on top of the mowing or it gets too tall to mow (and then I am just knocking it over.) It's attractive looking, but not particularly fragrant. It's even managing to grow under the Walnut trees. Anyway, I should have most things playable by the end of the Labor Day weekend, though branch trimming will be a longer term project through the cooler months. I'll need to make some signs to direct players to the next hole in a few locations (11->12, 12->13, 14->15, 15->16, and 18->1. In general these are the longer gaps between holes, which involve a bit of a hike (less than 7->8 at Giles Run), but also aren't exactly obvious where to go. I decided, in the end, that these hikes were better than stringing some crappy holes together. 11->12 will be the furthest and most complex hike, but I start breaking in a trail so that it will be a bit more obvious (it will cross right in front of 13's tee, which will help make the transition from 12->13 more obvious in the end. 14 is the power line cut, 15 cuts across 14's fairway, but this is one of those cases where I think the crossing fairways results in 2 better holes, despite the crossing of the s̶t̶r̶e̶a̶m̶s̶ fairways.

Cleaning up hole #2

10/12/2019

The last two years have seen a number of pines come down. Since most of the baskets weren't deployed, no damage to the equipment. But it's making transit of the property a little more difficult than once it was.

The redesign work continues. Looking at the power line cut again (after Mon Power's contractors did their so-called clearing work) I need to build a platform for the tee. That tee will be #7 on one of the loops. I need to cut the fairway for #6. A lot of volunteer white pines and red cedars are sprouting up in the area where I'd like to fairway to be on #6.

#9 on this loop might be more than a little arduous. Both in making it and playing it. It almost might make sense to break it into a couple of holes. (23 hole course anyone?). There is no obvious ATV trail. It's pretty steep on that side of the mountain. There's a cave over there too. And rocky.

This is fun (I think).
