Congratulations to UCONN's Kubatana!
Kubatana - meaning ‘unity, community, togetherness’ in Shona - is a vibrant global music and social justice vocal ensemble.
This spring, Assistant Prof. of Musicology Dr. Janie Cole and graduate assistant Dr. Shannon McCalister developed a semester program on the theme of “DISEASE: Sound, Stigma, Salvation".
The program brought together powerful musical stories, songs and readings that explore humanity’s musical responses to disease and pandemics across centuries and cultures, whether mourning, challenging stigma, sharing public health knowledge, and offering hope.
Pictures are from Kubatana's visit to Leeway, the HIV/AIDS residential care home in New Haven, as part of their Activism, Outreach, and Community Engagement (AOCE) mission, and their end-of-semester concert in von der Mehden Recital Hall.
Bravo to all!
