🎶 D’Angelo — “Cruisin’” • 1995 ❤️‍🔥

Taking on a Smokey Robinson classic is a serious assignment… and D’Angelo made it completely his own.

Featured on his debut album Brown Sugar, D’Angelo’s version of “Cruisin’” kept the soul of the original while bringing that unmistakable ’90s feel — warm vocals, deep groove and the sound that would help define the emerging neo-soul movement.

Smokey gave us the blueprint.
D’Angelo gave a new generation its version. 🎶

That’s the beauty of great Black music — one generation creates it, another generation reimagines it, and the music keeps living.

So we gotta ask… 👀

Smokey Robinson or D’Angelo — which “Cruisin’” are you riding with? 🚗🎶👇🏾

‘The Wood’ (1999) Courteous Robber

This is one of those films that’s hard to pick a particular scene because they’re all so good. The casting for this is perfect. De’Aundre Bonds was iconic in this along with the rest of the cast. I never get tired of this movie.

🎬 CULT CLASSIC MOVIE NIGHT AT THE ATRIUM

“Baby D ain’t the one to play with!” 😂

Next Friday gave us plenty of unforgettable characters, but Baby D was DIFFERENT.

Played by The Lady of Rage, Baby D brought real hip-hop energy to the screen. Long before the movie, Rage was already known for her commanding delivery, hard-hitting style and work with Death Row Records. So when she stepped into Baby D, that toughness didn’t feel forced — she brought her own presence to the character. 🔥

Even Day-Day knew you had to approach Baby D with a little caution. 😂

This is exactly why we need Cult Classic Movie Night at The Atrium.

🍿 Pull Up
🍔 Grab Some Food
🥃 Grab A Drink
🎬 Watch the classics with a ROOM FULL of people who know every scene

Would Next Friday make your Cult Classic Movie Night lineup? 👇🏾

And more importantly… what movie should we put on the BIG SCREEN first?

🎬 YOUR STORY DESERVES A SCREEN — AND AN AUDIENCE.

From local stories to global stories, short films to documentaries, independent projects to full premieres — The Atrium wants filmmakers to bring their work to the big screen.

And we have to shout out Issa Rae and Insecure for showing what can happen when creators tell authentic stories from their own perspective. From The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl to building television that became part of the culture, Issa’s journey is a reminder:

Don’t wait for somebody to give your story permission to exist. CREATE IT. 🎥

Now, once you’ve created it — let’s put people in a room to experience it.

🎤❤️ Teddy Pendergrass — “Love T.K.O.” • 1980

Some songs don’t need to be loud to hit you HARD. 🥃🎶

“Love T.K.O.” is Teddy Pendergrass at his smoothest — that unmistakable voice delivering the kind of relationship truth you usually only understand after you’ve lived through it.

Sometimes you can love somebody and still have to admit…

This fight is over. Love won. You lost. T.K.O. 🥊❤️

Released in 1980 on Teddy’s TP album, “Love T.K.O.” became one of those slow-jam records that never left the rotation. Different generation, same feeling.

Turn the lights down, let that first note hit and suddenly everybody remembers somebody. 😂

👇🏾 What Teddy Pendergrass song are you putting on first?
