Steubenville Staging “Disney’s The Little Mermaid”
STEUBENVILLE-Steubenville High School is heading under the sea as it stages its spring musical production of “Disney’s The Little Mermaid.”
Performances are set for March 12-14 at 7 p.m. and March 15 at 3 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Join SHS drama and thespian members as they bring the fishy fable to life. Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, “The Little Mermaid” includes music by Academy Award winner Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a compelling book by Doug Wright, with popular songs including "Under the Sea," "Kiss the Girl" and "Part of Your World."
The story follows Princess Ariel, the youngest daughter of King Triton who wishes to pursue human Prince Eric and makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems and Ariel relies on the help of her friends Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, and Sebastian the crab.
Scott Wolodkin, advisor of the Thespian and Drama clubs, will direct the production and said it was the first time that “The Little Mermaid” has been performed, but SHS has staged many other Disney shows including “Mary Poppins,” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Newsies,” and “Freaky Friday.” He also anticipates some special effects to entertain the audience.
“We have hired ZFX Flying Effects from Kentucky for several characters and actors in the show. The students spent an entire weekend with a professional working on their new aerial flying skills for the production,” Wolodkin said. “When we performed ‘Mary Poppins’ in 2016, we added aerial flying for Mary and Bert, but that was only two characters. This year, we have six students on our roster and we have added many more exciting flying sequences into this production. The students have been working hard to bring the magic of Disney to the Steubenville High School stage.”
The cast includes Stella Schiappa as Princess Ariel; Michael Lancia as Prince Eric; Kyle Coladonato as Grimbsy; Julia Gentile as Flounder; Anthony Biasi as Scuttle; Andy Brown as King Triton; Matthew Miller as Sebastian; Mia Loy as Ursula; Emma Burr as Floatsam; Sa’Niyah Newton as Jetsam; Ashton Tulodzieski as Chef Louie/Pilot/Sea Creature; Isabella Fletcher as Princess Aquata; Addie Johnson as Princess Andrina; Gianna Thomas as Princess Arista; Aideen Shaw as Princess Atina; Caleigha Birden as Princess Adella; Christianna Rivers as Princess Allana; Robert Smith as Leeward; Ethan Goff as Windward; Jocelyn Walker, Eli Jankowski, Sarah Sullivan, Kylie Moffat, and Kennedy Babel as Gulls/Chefs/Sea Creatures; and Alexa Lancia, Emmy Martin, Ciara Fiedorczyk, Kylie Davis, Zelie McGovern, Ava Miller, Callie Graf, and Madison Jerideau as Sea Creatures/Lagoon Creatures/Courtiers.
