In every era of American culture, there has been an underground current, a restless creative force operating outside institutions, commercial expectations, and polite artistic boundaries. This is the world of fringe arts: experimental theater in abandoned warehouses, performance poetry in dim cafés, punk operas staged in basements, immersive dance installations in city streets, and multimedia works that refuse easy categorization.

Fringe arts exist because some artists are less interested in approval than discovery.
