A lot of people don't realize how the famous Lion switch in Seasons 3 and beyond in Legendary Defender was planned.
Yes, that's right -- Keith moving to the Black Lion, Lance to Red, and Allura taking Blue was planned from the very beginning of the show. It was designed as a thank you to Defender of the Universe.
In the original 1984 series, the pilots never matched their Lion colors. Keith wore red but piloted Black. Lance wore blue but piloted Red. It was part of the charm, but it also meant fans spent decades associating these characters with mismatched colors.
When VLD launched, co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery made a specific request: start the Paladins in Lions that match their uniform colors, so that when they eventually shift into the DOTU formation, it feels like the characters are growing into the roles that longtime fans already know.
In other words, VLD's Lion switch is the moment the new show becomes the old show. Keith takes Black, Lance takes Red, and Allura claims Blue… exactly like in 1984. VLD was built so that both versions would be canon, and the journey between them would be the story.
