⚠️ USDA has confirmed the presence of New World Screwworm (NWS) in southern Texas.

New World Screwworm is a serious pest that can affect livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, people. Unlike other maggots that feed on dead tissue, screwworm larvae feed on living flesh, causing painful wounds that can become life-threatening if left untreated.

🐄 Livestock producers should be on the lookout for:
• Wounds that are draining, enlarging, or contain maggots
• Irritated behavior, head shaking, or animals separating from the herd
• Loss of appetite or signs of pain
• Egg masses around wounds, ears, noses, navels, or other body openings

Even wounds as small as a tick bite can attract a screwworm fly.

If you suspect New World Screwworm:
✅ Contact your veterinarian immediately
✅ Report suspicious wounds or infestations to your State Animal Health Official or USDA APHIS
✅ Treat and monitor all wounds closely

While New World Screwworm poses a significant threat to animal health and livestock production, it is NOT considered a food safety concern. Animals entering the food supply continue to undergo rigorous inspection to ensure consumer safety.

Early detection and reporting are critical to preventing the establishment and spread of this destructive pest.
