SELA Arts Festival On July 27, the SELA Arts Festival will celebrate the arts & culture of the Southeast with local artists & musicians.

This past Saturday we hosted our second Artists and Allies gathering.

We brought together artists, creatives, and community members from across Southeast LA to talk about what arts advocacy looks like for our community, and to commit to making it real.

We heard from Board Co-Chair Jennifer Cuevas about what it means to show up for the arts at the regional level. We revisited what our community named as priorities at our February meeting. We voted, we talked, we built on each other’s ideas.

And then we made pledges. To the arts. To SELA. To each other.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, participated, and made a pledge. You are why this work matters.

Este sábado pasado celebramos nuestro segundo encuentro de Artistas y Aliados.

Reunimos a artistas, creativos y miembros de la comunidad de todo el sureste de Los Ángeles para hablar sobre cómo se ve la defensa de las artes en nuestra comunidad, y para comprometernos a hacerla realidad.

Escuchamos a la Co-Presidenta de la Junta directiva de , Jennifer Cuevas, hablar sobre lo que significa defender las artes a nivel regional. Revisitamos las prioridades que nuestra comunidad identificó en nuestra reunión de febrero. Votamos, conversamos y construimos juntos sobre las ideas de los demás.

Y luego hicimos promesas. A las artes. A SELA. Los unos a los otros.

Gracias a todos los que se presentaron, participaron e hicieron una promesa. Ustedes son la razón por la que este trabajo importa.

Last Friday, the SELA Arts Foundation joined the ’s Braided River at Speaker Anthony Rendon Riverfront Park in Maywood, an event bringing together world-renowned cellist and community groups doing work along the LA River.

We gathered to explore how culture can help restore our connection to water and the natural world. We toured the park and heard the history of the Sleepy Lagoon Memorial, learned to weave alongside Tongva elders, shared a meal, watched a mural come to life, and closed the day with live performances featuring Yo-Yo Ma and Angélica Negrón.

It was an honor to speak with Yo-Yo about the future and its potential to not only close the arts resources gap in our community, but to serve as a true community hub that addresses our community’s broader needs and brings us closer to the LA River.

Thank you to the LA Phil for bringing us all together.

Irresistible Resistance in SELA is back! ❤️
Our first pop-up in SELA in February was really special. Nearly 200 people came together to support local businesses, enjoy poetry and music, connect with one another, and remind ourselves that joy and community still matter, especially during difficult times.
So we’re doing it again.
Join us on Friday, June 26 for a night of live music, local vendors, food, and community in support of businesses impacted by ICE activity across Southeast LA.
Because joy is a form of resistance.

Nuestro primer evento en SELA en febrero fue algo muy especial. Casi 200 personas se reunieron para apoyar a negocios locales, disfrutar de poesía y música, convivir en comunidad y recordarnos que la alegría y la comunidad siguen siendo importantes, especialmente en tiempos difíciles.

The South Gate City Council is considering cuts to the Cultural Arts Division as part of efforts to address a budget deficit. We understand cities are facing difficult decisions right now, but reducing arts funding would have real consequences for our community.
The team at the South Gate Museum and Cultural Arts Division has spent five years showing up for our community, building art exhibitions, workshops, events, and programs that lift up local history and bring people together. They deserve our support.
Arts and culture are not extras, they are fundamental to what keeps our community connected and thriving.

Across Southeast LA and communities like ours, we already see what happens when artists and culture bearers are supported: stories are reclaimed, healing begins, and pride turns into collective action.
Arts and culture are not extras — they are essential.
They support youth, strengthen community health, stabilize neighborhoods, and build the foundation for long-term resilience.
But creativity cannot thrive on scarcity.
As the California Arts Council marks 50 years, we’re joining advocates across the state to call for $50 million in funding for arts and culture.
Because investing in culture means investing in communities — not just for today, but for generations to come.
