SCREENING TONIGHT!
DEAF(Sorda)

A major winner at Spain’s Goya Awards — the Spanish Academy Awards — DEAF announces director Eva Libertad as one of the most exciting new voices in European cinema. The film took home Goya Awards for Best New Director for Eva Libertad, Best New Actress for Miriam Garlo, and Best Supporting Actor for Álvaro Cervantes, in addition to winning the Audience Prize at the Berlin Film Festival, confirming its powerful emotional connection with audiences.

Ángela, a deaf woman, and Héctor, her hearing partner, are joyfully expecting their first child. But as motherhood approaches, Ángela begins to wonder whether she will be able to fully connect with her daughter in a world that too often fails to accommodate or understand deaf people. After the baby arrives, Héctor does everything he can to support her, but Ángela must navigate motherhood, identity, love, and isolation on her own terms.

Critics have praised DEAF as a “compassionate, sensitive debut” and an “emotionally complex portrait” of a woman whose life changes profoundly with the arrival of her child. Anchored by Miriam Garlo’s remarkable, award-winning performance, DEAF is tender, intimate, and deeply moving — a beautifully observed story about parenthood, communication, and the universal longing to be seen, heard, and understood.

An Outsider Pictures Release.

EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE OUR JULY SIFF MONTHLY AWARD BUZZ SCREENING:

CALLE MÁLAGA

Spanish cinema is having a major moment. With three Spanish films in Competition at the recently concluded Cannes Film Festival, Spain is once again at the center of the international film conversation. Into that exciting renaissance comes Calle Málaga, a Moroccan-Spanish gem that premiered at the Venice Film Festival last September, won the Venice Audience Award, and has since become an audience favorite at festivals around the world.

An irresistible crowd-pleaser full of warmth, humor, and late-life discovery, Calle Málaga is a film that will put a smile on your face.

The legendary Carmen Maura—the iconic Spanish actress beloved for her unforgettable work with Pedro Almodóvar—gives a radiant, deeply human performance as María Ángeles, a 79-year-old Spanish woman who has built a beautiful life for herself in Tangier, Morocco. Her days are filled with routine, community, memory, and independence—until her daughter arrives from Madrid with plans to sell the apartment María Ángeles has always called home.

Refusing to be pushed aside, María Ángeles fights back with wit, stubbornness, and spirit, determined to reclaim not just her home and belongings, but her sense of freedom. Along the way, she unexpectedly rediscovers love, sensuality, and the joy of being fully alive.

Written and directed by acclaimed Moroccan filmmaker Maryam Touzani (The Blue Caftan), Calle Málaga is a beautifully observed Moroccan-Spanish production and Morocco’s official submission for the Academy Awards®.

Tender, funny, and full of heart, Calle Málaga is a celebration of resilience, second chances, and the power of standing your ground—at any age.

Writer & Director: Maryam Touzani
Starring: Carmen Mauram, Marta Etura, Ahmed Boulane, María Alfonsa Rosso

ENCORE SCREENING OF SIFF A3 AUDIENCE AWARD WINNER
JANE ELLIOTT AGAINST THE WORLD

TUESDAY, MAY 12th

What makes this film so unforgettable is not just the history— it’s the woman at the center of it.

In the wake of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, a small-town schoolteacher made a radical choice—to turn a classroom into a living experiment that would expose the reality of prejudice in a way no lecture ever could. That moment would ripple across decades.

But this film isn’t about the past—it’s about right now.

We meet Jane Elliott on the road, in real time—commanding rooms, disarming audiences with humor, and then hitting with truths that are impossible to ignore. She’s sharp, unpredictable, often hilarious— and completely fearless.

This is not a history lesson—it’s a live wire.

A moving, unforgettable portrait of a woman who refuses to soften, step back, or stay silent—and a film that dares all of us to lean in just a little closer.
