Thanks so much for making our first ever Somerville Fermentation Festival a success! 😍 Big hugs to our fantastic vendors, amazing volunteer team, the Armory for their beautiful space, and all our guests for making it as vibrant as it was. We had no idea there would be such a great turnout and are so honored that you took time out of your rainy day to celebrate the power of fermentation with us 😳

We understand that the space was too crowded and are working to improve that for our next festival. We will also be posting a survey for feedback on our festival, so be on the lookout for that within the next week! Feel free, however, to send us a DM with thoughts on your experience. We want to make the next Somerville Fermentation Festival a comfortable and effective experience for everyone involved 🫶

Lastly - we still have stickers ($2) and totes ($30) for sale and will be ordering more T-shirts ($28) for those who were not able to grab the size they wanted! Please DM us with your email address, order details (item & quantity), and preferred size (for T-shirts), and we will make sure to get this wonderful merchandise into your hands as soon as possible!

Stay tuned for more information about various upcoming events (Kraut Mobs & Bagel Brunches), other collaborative events we may host…and for our next fermentation festival 🙌

Thanks to for the lovely photos. We’ll be posting more pictures from this event over the next few days. If you see yourself, tag yourself!

✨ VENDOR SPOTLIGHT ✨

Prunus mahaleb is a cherry tree that grows in the Mediterranean and Middle East. The cherry stone can be cracked open to extract a seed. For centuries that seed has been ground into powder to produce a spice called Mahalab.

When the founder Ayham Haddad moved to Boston from Jordan, he wanted to introduce more savory, Middle Eastern/Mediterranen inspired baked goods to the West, and thus Mahalab Bakery was born. Named after this spice from prunus mahaleb, Mahalab Bakery offers artisanal Mediterranean products. Their goods are naturally fermented and filled with unique ingredients. Since 2020, they have been striving to serve the Greater Boston area with a new taste of savory goods.

✨ SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT ✨

Milk, Microbes, & Magic
Jennifer Tolliver; Crumb & Rind, Formaggio Kitchen
2:45 pm - 3:45 pm in the Armory cafe

Join Jennifer Tolliver of Crumb & Rind and Formaggio Kitchen for a spirited dive into the microbial world of cheese. From bloomy rinds to blue veins, we’ll break down how milk becomes magic. This talk weaves together fermentation science, aging techniques, and cultural traditions, with a nod to the folklore behind our favorite funky cheeses.

Jennifer Tolliver is a cheesemonger at Formaggio Kitchen and the founder of Crumb & Rind, where she leads classes and tastings that blend cheese, science, and folklore. She began her cheese journey as a dishwasher at a creamery, worked her way into the aging caves, and eventually became a cheesemaker. Today, she shares her love of cheese with curious eaters across the greater Boston area and beyond.

✨ VENDOR SPOTLIGHT ✨

In Ayurveda, food is meant to generate Agni Deepti (fire of brilliance) to the Jataragni (fire inside the stomach). This is the preliminary process of digestion before food is converted into nutrition and energy. A key principle of Ayurvedic nutrition is that food should consist of whole (non-processed) ingredients to optimize health benefits, while also tasting great.

Atina Foods’ products are rooted in Ayurvedic principles, American herbalism, and the concept of food as medicine, using taste as the vehicle. The adapt traditional practices with locally available produce for unusually delicious fermented and preserved condiments that help to balance your life. Their globally inspired and locally sourced fermented and preserved condiments are made to balance flavor and health, and uplift simple foods. With low-energy consumption and time-tested techniques, they transform underutilized produce into shelf-stable condiments that are both familiar and unique—aiding adventurous, health-conscious cooks in their quest to elevate any meal, even dessert 😉
