Good morning~ Let’s talk pests… garden pests that is…and we don't mean rodents or deer or the like. Nectar sucking pests that can literally destroy your gardens, flowers, crops, lawns, or trees. Pests such as aphids, white flies, Japanese Beetles, squash bugs, mites and the like.

We had a great segment on healthy soil and why it matters. Let's get into why and the pesty side of things. It is one huge reason to use our worm castings our worm tea, right?

Healthy soil deters pests by building strong, disease-resistant plants and fostering natural predator ecosystems. When plants have optimal nutrition and minimal stress, they produce natural compounds that repel insects. Meanwhile, balanced, living soil supports beneficial organisms that naturally hunt down harmful pests before they can damage crops.

We have discussed on many occasions that our worm castings and tea deter pests that can devastate your gardens. We try to educate in our posts and conversations that it is because the castings or tea makes our soil healthy, thus making the host (plant, bush, tree or lawn) healthy.

Healthy Soil = Healthier Plants
The primary way soil can protect against pests is by making plants healthier. Soil provides plants with vital nutrients and chemicals that promote growth. When soil lacks these components, plants can’t grow as strong.

It may only take a small amount of insect activity to kill off an unhealthy plant. This is commonly the case with grass. Blades that are weak are the first to go when insects like armyworms infiltrate your property. Despite their name, armyworms are not worms; they are the caterpillar (larval) stage of several species of night-flying moths, most notably the fall armyworm. They get their name from their habit of moving across lawns and fields in massive, troop-like groups, rapidly devouring everything in their path.

Let's stop here for now. Thanks for being here and remember to have a groovy day!
