Dear Racers and Participants,
We are thrilled to welcome each of you to this year's event at The Summit at Snoqualmie! Reflecting on the years that have passed since we began this journey, I can't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for the incredible community we have built here in the Pacific Northwest, and how this event truly celebrates that.
Snowboarding in the PNW holds a special place in my heart. Growing up, I spent countless hours riding at Summit East (Hyak and PacWest Ski Area), where the camaraderie among snowboarders flourished. Those early days shaped not only my love for the sport but also my desire to create an event that celebrates our passion for snowboarding and the culture that keeps us together.
The rich history of snowboarding at Hyak is woven into the fabric of our community. From the riders who pushed the boundaries here on the sickest wall hits or the legendary Hyak halfpipe, to the friendships forged in the lift lines and around parking lots chats or the second level in the lodge, these moments have contributed to the legacy we cherish today. The PacWest Banked Slalom event is a continuation of that legacy, a chance for us to gather, compete, and uplift one another as we share our love for the “sport” of snowboarding on some rowdy banks.
As you prepare for day two of the race, I want to encourage you all to embrace the thrill and excitement that comes with snowboarding. Remember that it's not just about the competition, but also about the journey, the experiences, and the connections we create along the way, such as those occurring in the Hyak Lodge as we speak! This event is a celebration of our shared passion, and I encourage each of you to ride at your highest level with stoke and determination, no matter the outcome. As my dear friend George Dobis once told me before my first snowboard race, “If you want to be good, you gotta be bad!!!” Those who knew George knew his passion for snowboarding. The tradition continues!
So, let the weekend inspire you, let the snow guide your turns, and let the spirit of your fellow racers, and Craig Kelly, (late friend & idol) lift you. Your dedication, hard work, and enthusiasm are what make this event truly special, and I am honored to witness the passion you all bring to Hyak aka Summit East this weekend.
From Olivia and I , and everyone at The Summit at Snoqualmie, thank you!
