Carbon Adventure Racing proudly announces that the Keystone Backyard Ultra will return on May 21, 2022! We have been so excited since last year and we are so grateful that we are coming back! Registration will open on January 29, 2022 so make sure you’re there to not miss out!

Over the past 7 years, our race directors Jake and Mike have been producing events under the LLC, Carbon Adventure Racing. We felt it was time to officially put all of our amazing events under one umbrella!! Nothing has changed, we just wanted to make sure that people know that all of our events are connected.

Starting tomorrow this account will cover all of Carbon Adventure Racing’s events including the Keystone Backyard Ultra. Check out our brand new website via the link in our bio to see all of the events we have to offer!

Each participant was given a wristband with their number and the words, “DNF,” written on it. When a runner would drop out, their band would be cut and it would be taped to the start/finish banner.

The bands represented the resiliency to hold on and keep pushing, and the cutting of the band was an incredible display of the lifting of the burden these runners carried.

As the day progressed, the pole became more and more filled reminding the remaining participants of how much they have persevered. @ Mauch Chunk Lake Park

After a hard fought battle that lasted 31 hours and covered 129 miles, one runner remained. Congrats to Scott Snell on being the last person standing at the inaugural running of the Keystone Backyard Ultra!

Also, congrats to Tom Flummerfelt who put up an amazing fight to earn the title of being the assist.

An important note regarding the venue of the Keystone Backyard Ultra. The race will now be held at Mauch Chunk Lake Park in Jim Thorpe, PA. All participants should check their email for more information on this change.

We could not be more excited for this beautiful new course and we can confidently say that we will have a successful day on May 22!

Let’s meet our staff!

Our race director is Jake Martinez who is an avid, collegiate runner and at only 20 years old, he has already produced over 10, high quality running events. He has had the opportunity to work for the world's largest obstacle racing company and has put the skills he has learned there into his own events. You may see Jake tearing it up on the track now, but his passion still lies on the trails.

Our Race Co-Director is Mike Martinez. Mike truly is a busy man balancing his family life and career as a surgeon with his passion for ultra running. He has been producing races for the past 20 years while amassing an impressive running resume himself including 17 marathons, the Eastern States 100 and the USATF Club Cross Country National Championship.

It truly is a family affair at the Keystone Backyard Ultra and their combined experience will make a truly unforgettable experience next May.
